๐ด He was so great that he made Messi retire from the Argentina national team.
He ran like a winger, finished like a striker, and defended like a man who owed somebody money, and through it all he never once looked like someone who believed he could lose.
At the 2015 Copa Amรฉrica final, Chile stood on the biggest stage in their history against Messi's Argentina, the team everyone was sure would finally end their curse. It came down to penalties, and when Alexis stepped up he didn't smash it or blast it โ he chipped it straight down the middle, cool as you like, and Chile lifted their first ever major trophy.
A year later, the script repeated itself almost exactly. Another final, Messi again, Argentina again, Alexis Sรกnchez again โ and Chile won the Copa Amรฉrica back to back, with Alexis walking away as the best player of the tournament.
That second heartbreak hit different. It hit so hard that Messi walked away from the Argentina national team altogether, and it took FIFA and CONMEBOL begging him just to bring him back.
Before Ronaldo, before any el Clรกsico, before any European final ever mattered โ the hardest man for Messi to beat wasn't wearing white. He was wearing red, and his name was Alexis Sรกnchez.
