Following reports of the detention of 's First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, calls on all Parties to exercise restraint, cease hostilities, and uphold the Revitalized Peace Agreement in the best interests of their people.

“Tonight, the country’s leaders stand on the brink of relapsing into widespread conflict or taking the country forward towards peace, recovery and democracy in the spirit of the consensus that was reached in 2018 when they signed and committed to implementing a Revitalized Peace Agreement,” said the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom.

In order to stop more instability, the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of African Affairs has called on President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar to have direct talks in response to the rising violence in South Sudan.

The United States emphasised in a forceful statement:

🔹 Threatening people with militia-led attacks
🔹 Government-backed airstrikes raising tensions
🔹 Appointing sanctioned officials to high posts

These developments coincide with mounting concerns that the tenuous peace agreement may fall apart, posing a threat of a full-scale battle.

As a warning that further fighting might have catastrophic humanitarian and regional repercussions, Washington has demanded swift de-escalation efforts.
