Red Scarf Revolution

Red Scarf Revolution Awareness by design From 1975 to 1979, the Khmer Rouge reigned over a dark period in Cambodian history.

Nearly two million
Cambodians were murdered during the Year Zero revolution. The red scarf (Kramas) became associated with the Khmer Rouge as a result of their uniforms. Soldier uniforms, along with required dress for all citizens of Year Zero Cambodia, consisted of black pajama-like shirt, pants, rubber sandals, and the red Krama. The idea behind Year Zero is that all culture and traditions with

in a society must be completely destroyed or
discarded and a new revolutionary culture must replace it. All history of the nation or people before Year Zero were deemed largely irrelevant, as it will (as an ideal) be purged and replaced from the ground up. Teachers,
artists, and intellectuals were especially singled out and executed during the purges accompanying Pol Pot's Year Zero. Red Scarf Revolution aims to bring silenced art, culture, language, and the darkest tragedy in the history of Cambodia to light with designs that incite the resiliency of the Cambodian people. Year Zero revolution
re-appropriated for the new generation because we must know history in order to avoid its mistakes and
resurrect what has been purged in order to build anew.

UNESCO has officially recognized Tuol Sleng, M-13, and Choeung Ek as World Heritage memorial sites, honoring their deep historical significance. Once places of unimaginable suffering, these sites have been transformed into spaces of remembrance, education, and peace. Their designation is a national honor for Cambodia and a global model for truth and reconciliation. The July 18th ceremony marking the inscription was attended by U.S. Embassy Phnom Penh's CDA Bridgette Walker, noting the importance of this moment for Cambodia and the world. Let the world remember, reflect, and learn.

April 16, 1975

Dear Excellency and friend,

I thank you very sincerely for your letter and for your offer to transport me towards freedom. I cannot, alas, leave in such a cowardly fashion.

As for you and in particular for your great country, I never believed for a moment that you would have this sentiment of abandoning a people which has chosen liberty. You have refused us your protection and we can do nothing about it. You leave us and it is my wish that you and your country will find happiness under the sky.

But mark it well that, if I shall die here on the spot and in my country that I love, it is too bad because we are all born and must die one day. I have only committed the mistake of believing in you, the Americans.

Please accept, Excellency, my dear friend, my faithful and friendly sentiments.

Sirik Matak.
