Here are 5 things you need to know before buying rib fabric.

1. Check fiber content and blends

• 100% cotton : soft , breathable and comfortable for
casual wear
• Spandex / elastane blend : Essential for fitted ,
form-hugging clothing
• polyester blends : provides enhanced durability , wrinkle
resistance and color retention

2. Strech and recovery

• Recovery test : stretch a 4 inch piece of the ribbing as
far as it goes and let it go , if it returns to
its exact original measurement without
rippling , it has excellent recovery.

•Vertical vs Horizontal: Rib fabrics are known for their
vertical structure , ensure the
stretch goes horizontally across
the body for proper fit and comfort

3. Match the fabric weight
Choose a weight that appropriate for your specific project

•Lightweight (100-150 GSM) : Best for baby clothing,
summer camisoles,and
lightweight layering tops.

•Mid-weight (150 -250 GSM) : Versatile and great for fitted
t-shirt, turtlenecks and
everyday loungewear

•Heavyweight (250+ GSM) : Ideal for cuffs , neckbands,
and structured garments like
Sweater dresses

4.Determine width.

•Cut and open : if you are sewing a large (like a full dress)
make sure you check if the fabric is flat
open width bolt for larger patterns.

5.Confirm the purpose

•1*1 rib material: suitable for t shirt necklines,baby wear ,
undergarments
•2*2 rib material: suitable for everyday
wear
