Indigo dyeing with dabu resist printing remains because a few stubborn dreamers decided to keep the knowledge alive during the years the craft had all but vanished. Designer Alka Sharma worked with the last two remaining artisan families in Rajasthan, at the invitation of the Government of India, to revive the
near-extinct craft and create the brand known as Aavaran today.

Visit their trunk sale, with Aavaran’s limited edition designer pieces, open at Rithihi until 15th August, Monday to Saturday.

Here’s a look at Indian revivalist designer brand Aavaran’s first ever trunk sale in Colombo. With its products, Aavaran presents the possibilities to revive near-extinct crafts with natural resources available in the South Asian region.

Aavaran believes that sustainability is not just limited to being eco-friendly, repurposing waste and being ethical, but also being able to preserve and revive our heritage and provide an economically sustainable living to makers of the region, in connection to natural materials and markets.

This is a conversation for anyone who appreciates handcrafts, artisanal textiles, slow fashion, and natural dyes. Join us on Friday 7th August, 4.30 pm, at Rithihi.

In conversation with designer Alka Sharma, we will discover her brainchild brand ‘Aavaran’ and how they worked with local artisans to revive an indigo resist dye craft from near extinction.

With Aavaran’s trunk sale, we will bring you up close with the commercial outcomes of that revival operation. With the
documentary Neel Raag (True Blue), directed by Swati Dandekar, we will travel across India’s diverse landscapes to map out surviving indigo traditions, shifting between the monsoon setting of Tamil Nadu, the springtime landscapes of Telangana, and the wintry deserts of Kachchh (Gujarat).

Throughout these explorations, we’ll attempt to answer questions together. Why was the same indigo dye limited to
religious robes, medicine, and temple paintings in Sri Lanka?

What keeps indigo largely untapped as a textile dye? What work entails the revival of indigo crafts?
