Five rows of au gratin dishes remain nearly perfectly stacked in lines on the ocean floor near Titanic’s wreck site, the wooden crate which once carried them long since lost to the elements of the sea. Note the large pieces of coal in the foreground nearby, scattered from the ship’s bunkers as the liner went to the bottom and found almost ubiquitously at the site. This photograph was taken during the 1986 Woods Hole expedition to the wreck led by Robert Ballard, over the course of which the first eleven manned dives to visit the liner on the seabed were carried out between the 13th and the 24th of July of that year using deep sea submersible Alvin.

Incidentally, the 1986 expedition also became the first to “raise” a piece of the lost ship when a length of steel wire, possibly from one of Titanic’s funnels, was accidentally brought to the surface one morning atop the expedition’s camera sled ANGUS following a night of image taking. After short debate, operations director Tom Dettweiler removed the cable and dropped it back into the sea, in the process becoming the first person to touch any piece of the lost vessel that had gone to the bottom in more than 74 years.
