A major event in design : Hicham Lahlou launches the “Africa Design Awards”
Hicham Lahlou, who has been a key name in contemporary design in Morocco for several years, has not only become an emblematic figure of design on the African continent and in the Arab world, but is also one of the great names of global design and creates collections for prestigious international brands that collaborate wit
h the great names of design such as Philippe Starck, Hilton McConnico, Roger Tallon, the Campana brothers, Zaha Hadid, Vico Magistretti, Ora Ito, Matali Crasset etc…. At one and the same time designer, interior decorator, artist and plastic artist, he is also a visionary who defends the values of progress and undertakes actions aiming at promoting the values of design and creation in general. The founder of the Femade, the Moroccan Federation of Design and Industrial Design, today he is launching the Africa Design Awards, a platform of African design, a real melting-pot where designers from the continent but also from emerging countries can express themselves, make themselves known and put all their talent and creativity into the spotlight. The Africa Design Awards will reveal, from Morocco, the best talents of design in several categories like the most important world design awards. The project also incorporates the Africa Design Week, a major event which will be developed in partnership with the major names of artistic promotion. With this new and ambitious initiative, Hicham Lahlou sets about putting Morocco and Africa at the heart of the world design scene, a strategy which aims to create one of the largest networks of emerging design, without distinction of country or category. Having design recognized by the State
It was in 2009 that Hicham Lahlou decided to make a commitment for a major project for the promotion of national design. The same year, he founded the Femade (Moroccan Federation of Design and Industrial Design), establishing an institutional framework for design. It was with the support and shared vision of the Minister of Industry, Trade and New Technologies, Mr. Hicham Lahlou, appointed by the Minister, held the honorary role of Policy officer-consultant with the ministerial cabinet for the promotion of design and industrial design. A major event linked to his action with the Ministry sealed an agreement between the Femade and Ompic. On 26th April 2011, he co-organized, in his capacity as President of the Femade, with Mr. El Malki, Director General of Ompic, the international day of intellectual property under the patronage of the WIPO in Geneva, giving design the place of honour under the theme “Conceiving the Future”. In the presence of Ms. Boucetta, Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry, he thus became the initiator of a historical framework agreement which was signed between the Femade and the Ompic for the promotion of design and industrial design. Hicham Lahlou, fer de lance du design contemporain au Maroc depuis de nombreuses années est non seulement devenu une figure emblématique du design sur le continent Africain et dans le Monde Arabe, il fait également partie des grandes signatures du design mondial et signe des collections pour de prestigieuses marques à l’international qui collaborent avec des grands noms du design tels que Philippe Starck, Hilton Mc Connico, Roger Tallon, les Frères Campana, Zaha Hadid, Vico Magistretti, Ora Ito, Matali Crasset etc…. A la fois designer, architecte d’intérieur, artiste et plasticien, il est aussi un visionnaire qui défend des valeurs de progrès et entreprend des actions visant à promouvoir les valeurs du design et de la création en général. Fondateur de la Femade, la Fédération Marocaine du Design et du Design Industriel au Maroc, il lance aujourd’hui Africa Design Awards, une plateforme du design Africain, véritable creuset où les designers du continent mais également de pays émergents pourront exprimer, faire connaître et mettre en exergue tout leur talent et créativité. Africa Design Awards révèlera, à partir du Maroc, les meilleurs talents du design dans plusieurs catégories à l’instar des plus grands prix de design mondiaux. Le projet englobe également Africa Design Week, un événement de taille qui sera développé en partenariat avec de grands noms de l’événement et de la promotion artistique. Avec cette nouvelle initiative ambitieuse, Hicham Lahlou entreprend de positionner le Maroc et l’Afrique au cœur de la scène mondiale du design, une stratégie qui vise à créer l’un des plus grands réseaux de design émergent, tous pays et toutes catégories confondues. Faire reconnaître le design au niveau de l’Etat
C’est en 2009 qu’Hicham Lahlou décide de s’engager pour mener à bien un projet d’envergure pour la promotion du design national. Il entreprend la même année de fonder la Femade (Fédération Marocaine du Design et du Design Industriel), instaurant pour la première fois au Maroc un cadre institutionnel et légitime à la discipline design. C’est avec le soutien et la vision partagée du Ministre de l’Industrie, du Commerce et des Nouvelles Technologies M. Ahmed Reda Chami, que la Femade voit ainsi le jour en juin 2009. Hicham Lahlou, sur nomination du Ministre, occupera de 2009 à 2011 la fonction de Chargé de mission-conseiller à titre honorifique auprès du cabinet ministériel pour la promotion du design et du design industriel. Un évènement majeur lié à son action au Ministère scellera un accord entre la Femade et l’Ompic. Le 26 avril 2011, il co-organise en tant que président de la Femade avec Monsieur El Maliki Directeur Général de l’Ompic la journée internationale de la propriété intellectuelle sous l’égide du WIPO de Genève, mettant le design à l’honneur sous le thème « Concevoir le Futur ». En présence de Mme Boucetta, Secrétaire Générale du Ministère de l’Industrie, il devient ainsi l’initiateur d’une convention cadre historique qui sera signée entre la Femade et l’OmpIc pour la promotion du design et du design industriel.
