Yesterday I fulfilled a long-held ambition and visited the wonderful Snooks the Hatters in Bridport.

Mrs Hats and I were provided with tea and biscuits, Burt and Bran the wonder hounds were provided with unlimited gravy bones, and after a little more than an hour I left the marvellous emporium with five new hats.

Snook's was opened in 1896, and the level and style of service seems to have remained pretty much the same ever since. If you want a terrific new hat and an even more terrific shopping experience get yourself to Snook's.

Happy New Year. It's time to tell you about a second challenge that I received for 2022. My friend Tom challenged me to slip the same hat in twice and see if anyone noticed. Since I provided a load of extra hats I still easily made the challenged 365, but as far as I know nobody twigged that these two hats, posted on days 18 and 174 respectively, are the same hat turned inside out.

365. Criminy! When I started this little bit of idiocy a year ago I wasn't sure that I'd manage to complete it, but here we are. I'm amazed. I'm also a little sad, but all good things must come to an end.

Thank you all, dear friends, for coming on this ridiculous journey with me. Thank you for supporting the causes I've promoted along the way. Thank you for the loan or gift of hats.

What now? Lots of people have asked what next year's challenge will be. I'm afraid I've learned my lesson, I won't be doing another 365 of anything, but I will carry on posting the occasional hat when something new comes my way. I also intend to sit down and work out some statistics, how many borrowed hats; how many I bought just for this; how many I owned a year ago; how many I made for this; how many were made for me; which were the favourites each month, etc. I've also been asked about a book with all the photos in: that sounds like a lot of work, but it might be fun and it might raise a few pence for charity, so keep your eyes open for it.

In terms of future challenges that don't involve 365 of something, I have a couple left over from last year's recommendations, and I really want to build a tank (I'll probably have to scale that ambition down to something more manageable, like a hover-bike).

364. Xtra

Throughout the year there have been a number of complaints and dissensions about household object being worn in place of a 'proper' hat. Well, you're wrong. Flowerpots, sieves, colanders, tea cosies, pans, and traffic cones are all hats in the right circumstances.

BUT since I wouldn't want to disappoint anyone, even pedants, here's a few extra hats that haven't made the cut. There, happy now? Good.

364. Final fun Hat Friday!

I'm not really into brand names: I have a Landrover shirt and I'm wearing a Guinness hoodie in this photo, but other than that I think the only branded clothing I have is a pair of Clarks brogues.

However, I've always fancied a Stetson hat. Not just the type of hat that people often call a Stetson, but a felt cowboy hat actually made by the Stetson company.

362. The last of Great Aunt Muriel's hats today.

This was the hat she always wore on the anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria, when she would don full mourning and spend a happy day out and about berating young gals and whippersnappers for not being sufficiently sombre, and belabouring them with her cane-handled bumbershoot if they dared to utter the word 'but...'

GA Muriel kept up her annual tradition (though she always called it a 'holiday') until her own demise in 1998, coincidentally on the anniversary of the death of George V, which she would have hated because she never forgave him for spurning her overtures in a small theatre in Stepney in 1927 where she worked briefly as a chorus girl. The incident has always been assumed by the family to be the reason she never married.

361. This is the best bit of Christmas 2022.

Offspring #2, who has lent me a couple of hats this year, is fantastically creative and artistic, and gave me this fabulous hat that she made for Christmas.

She also cannot be in a photo without pulling a face or making a rude gesture. If by chance she does end up in a photo then she almost always asks for it not to be shared on social media.

So when she asked if I'd like a photo-with-the-artist, AND cheerfully agreed that I could share it, well... it really must be Christmas.

So here's my Pea, a wonderful girl turning into a fantastic young woman. I love her and I am so very proud to be her ol' Dad.
