Are subcultures dead?
Hi guys today we’re discussing on the death of subcultures with the rise of social media and young people struggling with their identity
First of what is subcultures?
Oxford dictionary say "A self‐defining group within a society which holds different values and norms to those of the majority"
Subcultures people may familiar with be "Punk,Gothic,Emo,indie kids,etc..."
I personally don't think subcultures are dead but have sort of evolved
Subcultures used to have a lot of influence in how we dress and live as a person
But in this modern age,mostly our generation who were born into this technologically advanced era where communication is as easy as breathing (or not if u have asthma) we can just be in any subcultures as much as we want from the comfort of our home
As good as it is this is the very thing that is confusing of ourselves from our identity
One contemporary "sort of Subculture" I really like is the gaming community(the real gaming not the mobile ones) even though I'm not really that much of a gamer myself
They have their own niches,inside jokes and terms
Along with the gaming community, I also love the cosplay one,I love being around nerdy geeky people they're the best
They just seem so passionate about what they do
In fashion we have this "Personal style" conversation for a long time now and we still haven't got a grasp on it yet
Mindlessly following these TikTok microtrends hoping to get more followers on IG
Business core,bloke core,core core core these cores are not gonna help u find ur personal style, these are just consumerism propaganda from these fashion brands to get u to buy more of their clothes
If u think u have a personal style and is still worrying about fitting into a social norm than it is not urs
People used to hang out in groups and go to clubs or concerts irl now it's just in discord and reddit
As a socially anxious person myself,I also do struggle with socializing and still struggling but u gotta get out of ur comfort zone and try to connect with people with similar interests as u(so yeah call me a hypocrite cuz I am one)
In that way u can be ur true self,a place where ur truely belonged and then it is when u can finally look for ur "Personal style" even though I don't think it's really that important
Just being true to urself is enough tho its not that easy sometimes
