It is a short walk uphill (10 -15 mins) to the tower from the main car park and the nearby bus stops. Please use existing tracks and paths to avoid damaging the natural habitat and wildflowers found within this legally protected Natura2000 site. Do take extra care when using the track

s leading to and from the tower, as they can be steep and uneven in places. Wearing footwear with a good grip is recommended. Don't forget to bring drinking water, a hat and rain / sun protection as required. 'Goats at Dwejra' - Part 2
We previously shared a post featuring a fantastic B/W photo of goats taken at by Guido Stilon in the 1950's - do take a look :-)

Back in January 1733, however, the presence of goats grazing on land close to the tower was the cause of a documented disagreement!

'Giovanni Domenico Gatt, castellan at Dwejra Tower, reported Salvatore Seichel, a shepherd who lived in Saint George Fief (limits of Santa Luċija), for using a tract of public land around the tower to graze his goats.

The tract extended for five 'salmi', eighty 'tmiem' of land (almost 144 hectares).The prohibition was to be found in one of the 'Bandi' (an official notice or proclamation) issued by the Governor of Gozo. Seichel got a fine notwithstanding that he declared that he was unaware of the prohibition.He appealed to the Seneschal to absolve him and drew his attention to the fact that for many years the shepherds of the village of L-Għarb had taken their flocks to graze the area and to drink from a spring in the same spot.The matter protracted itself for months...'

It's hot out there...but always cool at
We don't have air conditioning (it's not something they thought about back in 1652), but with 3.5-metre-thick walls and three large windows, this knights-era coastal watchtower is considerably cooler inside.

Often there's also a very welcome breeze up on the rooftop, where you can also enjoy fantastic views across the coastline and

The tower is open on Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Free entry (your donations always appreciated).

It's just a short walk up to the tower from the car park/bus stop at Dwejra, but with the current high temperatures, please don't forget to bring plenty of drinking water, a hat, and sun protection.

Wara 20 sena ta’ perseveranza, Din l-Art Ħelwa finalment ingħatat mill-awtoritajiet il-kustodja ta’ din il-batterija importanti. Il-pubbliku huwa mħeġġeġ biex JOQGĦOD ’IL BOGĦOD mis-sit, peress li partijiet minnu qed jikkrollaw. L-organizzazzjoni issa tinsab f’pożizzjoni li tibda l-proċess biex takkwista l-permessi meħtieġa għar-restawr tiegħu u tfittex il-finanzjament meħtieġ.

After 20 years of perseverance Din l-Art Ħelwa has finally been granted by the authorities the guardianship of this historically important battery. The public is urged to KEEP AWAY of the site as parts of it are collapsing. The organisation is now in a position to start the process to aquire the permits for its restoration and search for funding.

‘The Order’ - a FREE talk by historical fiction and short story author, Peter Portelli, at Gozo Central Public Library, St. Francis Square, (Pjazza San Franġisk), Victoria, on Wednesday 27 May 2026 from 10.30am - 11.30am. This FREE talk will be given in English.

‘When a great armada of Ottoman ships appears on the horizon off Malta in 1565, Jean de Valette, the Grandmaster of the Knights of Saint John, must find the courage to defend the island against overwhelming odds. The fate of Europe hangs in the balance.

Peter Portelli masterfully weaves story and history into an interesting tapestry of fast-moving adventures of love, hate, bravery, betrayal, victory, and defeat. Intriguing, informative, and entertaining!’ (Review of The Order by Dr Philip Farrugia Randon, Source: Midsea Books, 2023).

At this library event, the Maltese author will talk about his writing in general, both as an artistic expression and as a craft, and explain why he chose to focus on historical fiction as his preferred genre. Peter will also discuss the importance of driving a story forward with the plot or characters and share insights into why he focused on the Great Siege as the main subject for his critically acclaimed debut novel.

He will also look at the challenges and opportunities when being published in Malta and abroad, and the reception his first novel received back in 2023. The author would love to bring The Order to a wider audience and will share details of possible future prequels and sequels and other writing ideas he has planned.

About the author

Peter Portelli was born and raised in Malta. Years of working in and around buildings built by the knights infused in him a fascination about the Order of Saint John. It was this fascination and a passion for Maltese history that led him to write his first historical novel, ‘The Order’, based on the Great Siege of 1565.

In December 2025, Peter authored his second novel, ‘Odysseus' Choice’. Peter also writes short stories, three of which were published in the United States and ‘Read the Sign’ was nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

Sea Carrot (Daucus gingidium) 'Zunnarija tal-Bahar' in Maltese.

Frequently found growing on coastal cliffs and small islets of the Maltese Islands, it is also found inland up to 200 - 300m away from the shore, preferring abandoned fields, valley sides, and dry valley beds.

This robust biennial has light yellowish or white flowers in large, dense umbels. The leaves are fleshy and shiny.

The central flowers are often reddish-purple, while the rays of the umbel remain straight so that the fruiting umbel is flat-topped. The plant flowers in Spring and on into early Summer and is attractive to many pollinating insects.
