Before the Civil War
→ Enslaved people used waterways and the surrounding wilderness to try to escape bo***ge.

1861–1862
→ The Civil War reaches Elizabeth City and the Union captures the area.

1863
→ Black men begin joining the Union Army here, including the 1st U.S. Colored Troops.

1863–1865
→ Black Union troops operate in the region and help disrupt Confederate control while enslaved people continue escaping toward Union-held territory.

So the water you’re looking at wasn’t simply a backdrop to the Civil War.

For some people, that water represented a possible path to freedom.
