Let’s get something straight: An EXPEDITION is a purposeful, organized journey toward a defined goal under challenging conditions. What’s being sold in La Ventana is a guided leisure tour — a lovely experience you pay for. Both are fine! They’re just not the same word… a tour is not an expedition. If there is not a scientist on the boat, most likely you just overpaid for a tour that called itself an expedition.
Which is, of course, exactly why “expedition” gets slapped on the brochure. It sounds intrepid. It implies expertise, science, and a level of safety planning that “come swim with orcas for a fee” somehow doesn’t. Funny how the more adventurous-sounding word tends to appear right where the profit margin is.
None of this makes wildlife tourism evil. It just means that when someone calls their tour an expedition, it’s fair to ask WHAT, exactly, is being expeditioned—and to notice if the honest answer is “nothing, but it photographs well.” Let’s get real — most are doing it for the gram.
