During the Silk Road Mountain Race this year, I proudly wore my All Folks for All Folks cap the whole race, and stuck Gay’s Okay stickers at key spots all along the route.
Little did I know that on August 15th the government of Kyrgyzstan announced a new law banning the dissemination of anything which “denounces family and traditional societal values and promotes non-traditional sexual relations”.
Similar to laws passed in Russia and Hungary.
Overnight, and mid-race, my simple act of inclusion and solidarity became potentially punishable by law.
The law came into effect August 30th, the day I left the country and returned to my privilege and a world where my rights are upheld.
This reenforces the need for all the work we do, and that fact that “Gay’s Okay” is obvious for many, but is a complicated statement for so many of our LGBTQIA++++ family around the world.
We have restocked our All Folks for All Folks caps, have a brand new T-shirt of the design available as of now and will be donating a portion of profits from this capsule to Organisations in Kyrgyzstan working to support the community and fight back against this kind of legislation.
Check the link in our bio to read the response to the new law.
