He wrote one of the most beautiful songs in history.
Then he disappeared under the Hollywood Sign.
His name was eden ahbez — he spelled it lowercase, because only God and Infinity deserved capital letters.
Born in Brooklyn in 1908, he drifted to Los Angeles, joined a community of raw-food mystics called The Nature Boys, and lived in a sleeping bag beneath the Hollywood hills with his wife and son. He ate only fruit. He owned almost nothing. He looked like a prophet — because in many ways, he was.
In a cave near Palm Springs, he wrote Nature Boy.
He rode his bicycle to the Orpheum Theater, slipped the sheet music backstage, and didn't even write his name on it. He simply wanted the song in the world.
Nat King Cole recorded it in 1948. It went to #1 and stayed on the charts for 8 weeks.
Since then, Nature Boy has been covered over 4,000 times — by John Coltrane, Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, George Benson, Ella Fitzgerald, David Bowie & Massive Attack, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, James Brown, Eartha Kitt, Sarah Vaughan, and thousands more.
One song. Written by a man with no home, no ambition, no name on the page.
