Meet Landon Channey,
Landon is a third generation fishermen, his grandfather was a commercial fishermen and former Marine in California and his father and uncles all fished out of California as well, running boats while in high school. Often getting caught by their mom (Landon’s Grandmother) skipping school to go catch a good surf or go fish and make a few bucks.
Early on, Landon graduated high school like most kids and realized he didn’t really have or want a plan, as I am sure more than a few reading this can relate. However, his dad, a hard working man, had a different idea, and sat him down with a very detailed plan; “You are going to go build a resume with a photo, your height, weight, and statement of intent. Tomorrow we are going to Fishermen’s Terminal and you are going to hand them out to every boat on the dock.”
Within a few days, Landon landed a job on the F/V Polar Lady first doing shipyard work, then tendering the salmon fishery, then going up to the Berring Sea to pot cod fish, and then king crab. As a 19 year old beanpole of a fishermen, Landon quickly realized that so much of fishing is mental, the body can’t always keep up, but your mind is powerful enough to will the body to get so much more done than he ever thought possible.
Landon worked on a few different boats at first, working hard, stacking skills and learning the in’s and out’s of being on deck before landing on the Summer Bay with Captain Wild Bill and Deck Boss Nick McGlashan the crew was quickly like a family, where he worked for a big portion of his career as a deckhand and eventual deck boss, which was featured on the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch.
Landon currently fishes his summers on the Honey Badger in Bristol Bay, and spends crab seasons on the Silver Dolphin out of Dutch Harbor, he’s a dad, fiancé, and we are very happy to call him a friend.
