Vegan Leather Isn’t What You Think It Is — And That Matters.
Walk into almost any fashion store today and you’ll see the same promise repeated again and again: vegan leather. It sounds ethical. It sounds sustainable. It sounds like progress...but in many cases, it’s neither.
Behind the label, most “vegan leather” products are still made from conventional plastics like polyurethane (PU) or PVC—materials entirely derived from fossil fuels, designed to look good briefly, and destined to age poorly both in use and in the environment.
This isn’t an argument against alternatives to leather. It’s an argument for honesty, clarity, and smarter material choices.
To understand where we actually stand, it helps to draw a simple, objective line.
1. Plastic “Vegan Leather” (The Greenwashed Extreme)
Most products marketed as vegan leather today fall into this category. They are: 100% Fossil-fuel based (PU, PVC), non-biodegradable, designed for short lifespans, difficult or impossible to recycle and often marketed as sustainable by omission.
Calling plastic “vegan leather” doesn’t make it environmentally friendly. It simply means no animals were used. That’s a moral distinction, not an environmental one.
From a common-sense perspective, replacing one environmentally intensive material with another environmentally intensive material—just quieter about its impact—is not progress. It’s rebranding.
Plastic may avoid animal inputs, but it comes with Carbon emissions from oil extraction and processing, microplastic pollution and long-term persistence in landfills and oceans. This is not sustainability. It’s greenwashing with better PR.
2. Traditional Leather (The Historic Extreme)
Leather sits on the opposite end of the spectrum. It is partially natural and durable and long-lasting when properly made, but leather is not impact-free.
Its environmental cost includes, livestock emissions, land and water use, wastewater contamination when poorly regulated, chemical-intensive tanning processes and commonly finished with conventional plastic coatings like PU and PVC.
Leather’s strength is longevity. Its weakness is resource intensity. Pretending leather has no environmental footprint is dishonest—but so is pretending it’s interchangeable with plastic just because both can be sewn into a jacket.
They are fundamentally different materials with fundamentally different trade-offs.
3. Plant-Based Bio-Polymers (The Missing Middle)
This is where the real innovation lives—and where the conversation is often intentionally blurred. Materials like Desserto, made from cactus-based bio-polymers, represent a third category, not a variation of plastic and not a disguise for it.
Plant-based materials are partially bio-based with high organic content, designed to reduce dependance on fossil fuels, developed to balance performance with environmental responsibility, engineered using plant-derived polymers, proteins and cellulose rather than petroleum alone.
Unlike plastic “vegan leather,” these materials are built from renewable biological inputs, not oil. Unlike traditional leather, they avoid livestock-related impacts and heavy tanning chemistry.
They are not perfect—but they represent a directional shift, not a cosmetic one.
This is the difference between avoiding animals and reducing total environmental harm.
Why the Confusion is Convenient
Lumping plastic and plant-based bio-polymers together under the same “vegan leather” umbrella benefits exactly one group: brands that don’t want to change their supply chains.
Plastic is cheap, scalable, familiar and easy to label vaguely.
True bio-based innovation requires R&D, material transparency, process changes and long-term thinking. So instead, many brands choose the shortcut—and rely on consumers not asking follow-up questions.
A More Honest Way to Think About Materials
Let’s strip away the marketing and apply basic logic:
If it’s fossil-fuel based, it’s plastic.
If it’s animal-derived, it’s leather.
If it’s made primarily from plants using bio-polymers, it’s a new category, not a disguise.
Leather and plastic are not the only two options. They are simply the old extremes. Bio-based polymers sit in the middle—offering a way forward that reduces environmental harm without pretending trade-offs don’t exist. Cross industry cooperation is fundamental to achieve progress and ESG goals.
