The Last Light
Every evening, an old man named Daniel sat beside the window of his tiny house, holding a small oil lamp.
Years ago, his wife had given him that lamp and said, “Whenever life feels dark, light this. Remember, even a little light can defeat darkness.”
One winter night, Daniel heard a soft knock at his door. Outside stood a young boy, cold and hungry.
“Sir,” the boy whispered, “my mother is sick. We have no food.”
Daniel looked at his empty cupboard. He had only one piece of bread left for his own dinner.
For a moment, he hesitated.
Then he smiled, broke the bread in half, and gave it to the boy.
“Take this to your mother.”
The boy looked at the lamp in Daniel’s hand and asked, “But what will you eat?”
Daniel replied, “Tonight, I may sleep hungry. But I will sleep with a full heart.”
Years passed.
One morning, Daniel became seriously ill and was taken to a hospital. He was weak and had no family left.
A doctor entered his room, looked at him carefully, and suddenly smiled with tears in his eyes.
“Do you remember me?”
Daniel shook his head.
The doctor held his hand and said, “I was that hungry boy.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
The doctor continued, “That piece of bread did more than feed me. Your kindness taught me that life is worth living and that we should help others. I became a doctor so I could spend my life helping people.”
Daniel smiled.
“I only gave you half a piece of bread.”
The doctor replied, “But you gave me a reason to hope.”
Daniel closed his eyes peacefully.
And that night, for the first time in many years, the little lamp beside his window was not lit.
Because the light he had given away was now shining through another life.
Moral:
Never think your small act of kindness is meaningless. You may forget what you did, but someone else may remember it for the rest of their life.
