As is my custom in new cities, I seek out historic homes, and Sydney had some very interesting properties. Some we weren’t allowed to take video, but I think you’ll still get a sense of the people and families who lived there. Head over to our Ms. World Traveler YouTube channel now to check it out!

The same architect that worked on Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle in England was chosen to design Sydney’s new Government House in 1836, which has housed 28 governors as their official residence and working office. I thought the building and interiors were beautiful, as was the shaded veranda overlooking lovely manicured gardens.

Home of the “Father of the Australian Constitution,” William Charles Wentworth, Vaucluse House was designated in 1910 as Australia’s first house museum, and retains much of its original land and beach access. It took an hour and a half on public transport from my apartment to reach it, but I thoroughly enjoyed the grounds, the Mausoleum, and even ended up getting a private tour of the house.

We’re venturing to Sydney’s port area, called Circular Quay, a busy tourist hub centering around the iconic Opera House. There are several points of interest, including the oldest area in the city, and we’ll have them all laid out for you over on our Ms. World Traveler YouTube channel.

Whenever you picture Sydney, the Opera House is undoubtedly the first image that comes to mind. Rightly so! Designed in 1957 by a Danish architect, the iconic structure was an immense engineering challenge to build, took 14 years instead of the projected 4, and cost $102 million, rather than the estimated $7. Soaring ceiling tresses and angled windows highlight the views of the harbor in every direction, so little ornamental decoration was employed, other than the fabulous purple carpet, which I thought was stunning!

In one of Sydney’s most popular areas, Circular Quay, stands the Justice and Police Museum, which invites you to step into the dark side, the underbelly of crooks and cops, policing and punishment, misadventure and misdemeanor. My favorite exhibits were the stories of actual people, of which they have good records. Their faces often belied their character, and morbid or not, I found the accounts of women’s crimes fascinating. Entry is free, whether you take advantage of the guided tour, or prefer to meander about on your own.

The highest point in Sydney, the Tower Eye stands 309 meters tall, has 420 windows, which are cleaned by a semi-automatic machine every 2 days, and has 360-degree views, unless, of course, it starts to rain and all you can see are clouds. I got a few good shots before it was difficult to see very far.  Costing around $30, it takes about an hour.
