When you’re a teenager, it always feels like things are moving at an inappropriate speed. Too slow, like the time it takes to be an adult, to set the speed for yourself. In the rush, or in the sluggishness, it is easy to miss the colour in your life. But the fun thing about being a teenager is how anything can impress you- and how later, you realize those things were so much bigger t
han you imagined. Outings with classmates lead to longtime friendships. An A in biology leads to a career as a doctor. And a nice dress can make you feel like you’re on top of the world and change your perception of yourself forever. In these moments, we take a moment to look at the colour in our lives. We all pretend to be above fashion or caring about how we look, but our appearance influences our confidence for a reason. Getting to decide how we look, especially, reminds us of the control we have over our own lives. And when you’re a Nigerian teenager, it often feels as if everybody but you controls the wheel. That’s why Colours of Us exists. Because we remember what it’s like to be young, to miss the colour trying to move at a different pace every minute, to feel like everything you do, including what you wear, is oriented towards what adults will be happy to see, and you just happen to be performing for them.
