Title: You’re Not Doing God a Favor by Going to Church
📜 Introduction:
Many people walk into church on Sunday with the wrong mindset — as though God should be impressed by their presence. But the truth is, you don’t “do God a favor” by attending church. God is not needy; He is holy, self-sufficient, and the Creator of heaven and earth. Going to church is not a gift you give God; it’s a gift God gives you. It’s for your growth, your salvation, and your eternal destiny.
1️⃣ God Does Not Need Our Service — He Wants Our Obedience
• “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.” — Psalm 50:12
• “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice…” — 1 Samuel 15:22
God told Israel that He doesn’t need their rituals if their hearts are far from Him. Attending church without obedience is empty.
2️⃣ Church Attendance Without Transformation is Hypocrisy
• “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” — Isaiah 29:13
• Jesus rebuked the Pharisees because they loved public worship but refused to love God in private (Matthew 23:27).
If you leave church the same way you came in—without repentance, love, or humility—then you have simply “attended” but not “worshipped.”
3️⃣ God Uses Church to Build You, Not for You to Boast
• “Let us not give up meeting together… but encouraging one another…” — Hebrews 10:25
Church is God’s design to feed your spirit, teach you truth, strengthen your faith, and prepare you for heaven. It is for you. God is already complete; you are the one in need of transformation.
⚠️ Modern Examples — Celebrities Who Thought Fame Was Enough for God
Some public figures have spoken about “doing God a favor” by mentioning Him occasionally or attending church on special days while living in open rebellion to His word:
• Certain celebrities flaunt sin openly but post “God is good” on award nights, thinking it balances their lifestyle.
• Others give to charity or build churches but refuse to surrender their personal lives to Christ, as though money replaces obedience.
(Names omitted here to focus on the lesson rather than condemnation.)
📌 Bible Event Example:
King Saul thought offering a sacrifice was enough to please God after disobeying His direct instruction (1 Samuel 15:13–23). God rejected him, showing that obedience matters more than religious activity.
🔥 Call to Action:
Don’t think you’re doing God a favor by showing up on Sunday. He wants your heart, your obedience, and your daily walk. Go to church with humility, ready to be shaped by His Word. Worship Him in spirit and truth, because one day you’ll stand before Him—not with your church attendance record, but with the record of your obedience.
