✂️ SEWING TIP 01: HOW TO CALCULATE DART INTAKE FOR BODICE DRAFTING 📐
Mastering bodice drafting starts with precise math! Calculating your total dart intake ensures your garment fits perfectly without unwanted gaping or pulling.
The Formula for dart intake::
Total Dart Intake= Bust - Waist ÷ 2
This formula calculates the exact amount of ease that needs to be removed across all darts combined.
Example Calculation
Bust: 40''
Waist: 32''
Difference: 40'' - 32'' = 8''
Total Dart Intake: 8 ÷ 2= 4''
How to Distribute Your Dart Intake (4'' Total)
Standard Bodice (3 Darts):
Side Dart = 1''
Front Waist Dart = 2''
Back Waist Dart = 1''
Total = 4''
Princess Seam Bodice:
Front Waist (Princess Dart) = 2.5''
Back Waist Dart = 1.5''
Total = 4''
Key Designer Notes
Exact dart distribution always depends on body shape, desired fit, number of darts/seams, and style lines.
Accurate measurements = Better fit.
Better fit = Beautiful garments.
