❤️ Village Love Drama: Ada, Okechukwu, and the Yam Festival
In the village of Nkume, every Yam Festival was also a time for young men to show off to the maidens. Strong boys carried the biggest yams to the square, while the maidens sang and danced.
Ada, the most beautiful girl in the village, had two suitors: Okechukwu, a hardworking farmer, and Emeka, a lazy but smooth-talking palm wine drinker.
During the festival, Okechukwu carried a huge yam on his head, sweating but smiling. Emeka, not wanting to be outdone, ran to the barn, grabbed a yam that looked large ,only to find out it was rotten inside.
When the elders cut the yams to bless them, Okechukwu’s yam was white, healthy, and strong. Emeka’s yam collapsed into dust and worms. The crowd shouted, “He brought a dead yam for Ada!”
Ada laughed until her beads shook and said,
“I will marry the man whose yam is alive, not the one whose yam is sleeping in the grave!”
From that day, Okechukwu won Ada’s heart. Emeka was left to romance his calabash of palm wine.
