90% of bag makers don’t know this simple fact…

One of my students called me and said her machine was frustrating her…

Needle breaking, plate damaging, thread cutting… everything!

The the black head machine is not sewing her structured cartoon character for trolley school bag.

I told her to use a bigger side of needles since it not sewing the cartoon character.

Then she said something that caught my attention and i realized the issue could be the machine plate.

Many of you don’t know this…

There are different machine plate sizes!

If you use a small hole plate for a big needle.
your machine will fight you!

Before you blame your machine… check your plate!

Do you know this before today?

The pattern includes an oval handle opening, a flat bottom edge, curved side seams, and a boxed-corner guide measuring 6 cm. No zipper, pockets, lining pattern, buttons, straps, drawstrings, elastic, or additional pattern pieces are shown. Decorative metallic strips visible on the finished bag are surface embellishments rather than structural pattern pieces.

Construction Notes

The integrated handle is cut directly into each main body panel. The boxed corner creates the finished bag depth. Decorative trims should be attached before assembling the bag if you wish to recreate the appearance shown.

Step 1. Gather all supplies, fabrics, interfacing, matching thread, and sewing tools before beginning.

Step 2. Trace the pattern exactly as shown. Maintain the visible finished dimensions of 38 cm wide by 30 cm high. Draw the integrated oval handle opening and transfer the 6 cm boxed-corner marking.

Step 3. Add a 1 cm (0.39 in) seam allowance around all edges if your traced pattern does not already include seam allowance. Do not add seam allowance inside the handle opening unless it is not already included.

Step 4. Cut two outer fabric pieces, two lining pieces, and two interfacing pieces using the same pattern.

Step 5. Fuse interfacing to the wrong side of the outer fabric following the manufacturer's instructions to improve structure and durability.

Step 6. Carefully cut out the oval handle openings. Finish and understitch or topstitch around the openings for a smooth, durable edge.

Step 7. If recreating the sample, sew or bond the decorative metallic strips onto the outer fabric before joining the bag pieces. Keep all decorative stitching away from future seam allowances.

Step 8. Place the outer pieces right sides together and stitch both side seams and the bottom seam using a 1 cm seam allowance.

Step 9. Repeat the same process with the lining, leaving a turning opening of approximately 10–12 cm (3.94–4.72 in) in the bottom seam.

Step 10. Form the boxed corners by opening each lower corner so the side seam aligns with the bottom seam. Stitch across the marked 6 cm line to create the bag depth. Repeat for all outer and lining corners.

Step 11. Trim excess fabric from the boxed corners, leaving about 1 cm (0.39 in) beyond the stitching line to reduce bulk.

Step 12. Press all seams flat for a cleaner professional finish.

Step 13. Insert the outer bag into the lining with right sides together. Match the handle openings and upper edges carefully.

Step 14. Stitch completely around the upper edge and handle openings, maintaining an even seam allowance.

Step 15. Turn the bag right side out through the opening left in the lining.

Step 16. Close the lining opening using either a machine stitch close to the edge or an invisible ladder stitch by hand.

Step 17. Push the lining into the bag and shape all corners neatly.

Step 18. Press the entire bag thoroughly, paying special attention to the handle area and upper curved edges.

Step 19. Topstitch around the upper edge and handle openings if additional durability and a crisp finish are desired.

Step 20. Inspect all seams, verify both boxed corners are symmetrical, and ensure the bag stands evenly on its flat base.

Step 21. Trim any loose threads, make any final adjustments, and lightly press once more.

Step 22. Your modern oval-handle tote bag is complete and ready for everyday use.

Finished Project Summary

The finished tote bag measures approximately 38 cm (15.00 in) wide and 30 cm (11.81 in) high, with an estimated 6 cm (2.36 in) boxed base for depth. The provided pattern consists of one main body piece cut twice for the exterior and, if desired, twice for the lining. The visible measurements (30 cm height, 38 cm width, and 6 cm boxed corner) come directly from the image. Any dimensions not shown, such as the handle opening size, seam allowance, and lining pieces, are professional estimates based on standard tote bag drafting practices.
