Episode 47
TOPIC: DON'T BUILD A BUSINESS THAT NEEDS YOU EVERY MINUTE

Many tailors dream of owning a successful fashion business.
But here's a question:
If you stayed away from your workshop for one week, would your business survive... or would it stop completely?

If everything depends on you every minute of every day...
You may not own a business.
You may simply own a job.

1. A BUSINESS SHOULD BE BUILT ON SYSTEMS, NOT STRESS.
Some tailors do everything themselves.
They take measurements.
They buy materials.
They cut.
They sew.
They market.
They collect payments.
They even clean the shop.

At first, it's understandable.
But if nothing can happen without you, your business will struggle to grow.

2. LEARN TO BUILD PEOPLE, NOT JUST CLOTHES.
One of the smartest investments you can make is training reliable people.
Your apprentices and staff should gradually learn to handle responsibilities.
A business grows faster when the owner is not the only one carrying the workload.

3. CREATE A WAY OF DOING THINGS.
Successful businesses don't rely on memory.
They rely on systems.
Have clear ways to:
- receive customer orders
- record measurements
- track payments
- monitor delivery dates
- follow up with clients
When there is order, there is less confusion.

4. YOUR TIME IS ALSO A BUSINESS ASSET.
If you spend every hour solving small problems, you'll never have time to think about bigger opportunities.
Working in your business is important.
But working on your business is what creates growth.
Take time to plan, improve, and make better decisions.

5. FREEDOM IS PART OF SUCCESS.
A successful fashion business should not trap its owner.
It should give you the freedom to rest, spend time with family, attend training, or even take a short vacation without everything falling apart.
That kind of business isn't built overnight—but it should be your goal.

FINAL WORD
The true test of a fashion business is not whether you are always busy.
It is whether your business has structure.
Don't build a business that only works when you are present.
Build one that reflects your standards, even when you're not in the room.
Because real success is not just creating beautiful clothes...
It's creating a business that can grow beyond you.
THE END....

If you were away from your workshop for seven days, what is the first thing that would stop working—and what does that tell you about your business?

Welcome to Fashion Clinic; your weekly check-up for tailoring and fashion matters
Episode 46
TOPIC:
PROFIT IS NOT THE SAME AS INCOME

One of the biggest mistakes many tailors make is celebrating income.....without knowing whether they actually made a profit.
A customer pays you ₦100,000 for a job.
You smile.
You think, "I've made ₦100,000."

But have you?
Not so fast.

1. INCOME IS WHAT COMES IN.
Income is simply the money your customer pays you.
It tells you how much money entered your business.
It does not tell you how much you earned.

2. PROFIT IS WHAT'S LEFT.
Before calling it profit, ask yourself:
- How much did the fabric cost?
- How much did I spend on lining, thread, zips, buttons, and interfacing?
- What about electricity?
- Transport?
- Machine maintenance?
- Staff wages?
- Packaging?
- My own labour?
Only after these costs have been considered can you know your true profit.

3. HIGH SALES CAN STILL MEAN LOW PROFIT.
Some tailors are always busy.
Customers keep coming.
Money keeps entering.
Yet, at the end of the month...
There is nothing left.
Why?
Because they are measuring success by income instead of profit.
A busy workshop is not always a profitable workshop.

4. IF YOU DON'T KEEP RECORDS, YOU'RE GUESSING.
Many fashion businesses don't fail because there are no customers.
They fail because the owner doesn't know:
- what each garment really costs,
- how much the business spends,
- or how much it truly earns.
Without records, profit becomes guesswork.

5. A SMART TAILOR DOESN'T CHASE MONEY, THEY CHASE PROFIT.
Sometimes one well-priced garment earns more profit than three underpriced ones.
The goal is not just to sew more.
The goal is to build a business that keeps more of what it earns.

FINAL WORD
Money entering your account is exciting.
But don't confuse cash flow with success.

The question is not:
"How much did my customers pay me?"

The better question is:
"After all my expenses, how much did my business actually keep?"
Because businesses don't survive on income alone...
They survive on profit.
THE END ...

Do you calculate the actual profit on every garment you sew, or do you mostly focus on the amount the customer pays?

Episode 45
TOPIC: YOUR FASHION BUSINESS IS NOT A CHARITY.

One of the fastest ways to destroy a fashion business is to treat it like a charity.

Many talented tailors work hard...
Yet, at the end of the month, there is little or nothing to show for it.

Not because they lack customers.
But because they struggle to separate kindness from business.

1. KINDNESS IS GOOD... BUT IT NEEDS WISDOM.
Helping people is a beautiful thing.
But when every customer gets a discount...
Every friend pays "later"...
Every family member expects free sewing...

Your business begins to carry a burden it was never designed to carry.
A business cannot survive on goodwill alone.

2. EVERY FREE JOB HAS A COST.
Even when you don't charge for your labour, someone still pays for:
- your time
- electricity
- needles and thread
- machine maintenance
- transport
- your experience
"Free" is never truly free.
Someone absorbs the cost—and too often, it's you.

3. DON'T FEEL GUILTY FOR CHARGING FAIRLY.
•You spent years learning your craft.
•You invested in machines.
•You continue to improve your skills.
Charging a fair price is not greed.
It is how your business survives, grows, and continues to serve others.

4. BE GENEROUS ON YOUR TERMS.
If you want to help someone, let it be a deliberate decision, not something you feel forced into.
Generosity has more meaning when it comes from choice, not pressure.

5. A HEALTHY BUSINESS CAN HELP MORE PEOPLE.
When your fashion business is profitable, you can:
- employ workers
- support your family
- invest in better equipment
- give back to your community
- even offer free services when you genuinely choose to

But if the business is constantly struggling, everyone suffers.

FINAL WORD
Your fashion business is not a charity.
It is a responsibility.
Protect it.
Nurture it.
Let it grow.
Because the stronger your business becomes, the greater your ability to help others in the future.
Remember:
A tailor who values their work teaches others to value it too.
THE END...

Where should a tailor draw the line between being kind to customers and protecting the future of their business?

Episode 44
TOPIC: THE TAILORS WHO GROW FASTEST ASK BETTER QUESTIONS

Many tailors are looking for answers.
But very few are asking the right questions.

The quality of your business is often determined by the quality of the questions you ask.
Because the right question can change the direction of your business.

1. SMALL QUESTIONS PRODUCE SMALL GROWTH.
Some tailors only ask:
- "How can I get more customers?"
- "How much should I charge?"
- "Where can I buy cheaper fabric?"
These are useful questions.
But they are not enough.

2. BETTER QUESTIONS LEAD TO BETTER DECISIONS
Growing tailors ask questions like:
- Why do my customers come back?
- Why do some customers never return?
- What do people say about my brand when I'm not there?
- What one habit is limiting my growth?
- If I were my own customer, would I recommend myself?
These questions don't just give information—they reveal opportunities for improvement.

3. THE BEST LEARNERS STAY CURIOUS
Successful tailors don't pretend to know everything.
They observe.
They listen.
They ask.
They remain students of their craft and of their customers.
Curiosity keeps them moving forward.

4. EVERY MISTAKE HAS A QUESTION BEHIND IT.
Instead of saying,
"This customer is difficult."
Ask,
"What could I have communicated better?"
Instead of saying,
"Business is slow."
Ask,
"What value am I offering that makes people choose me?"
Sometimes the answer changes only after the question changes.

5. MAKE REFLECTION A HABIT
At the end of every week, ask yourself:
- What did I do well?
- What could I have done better?
- What did I learn this week?
- What should I stop doing?
- What should I start doing?
Those few minutes of reflection can produce months of improvement.

FINAL WORD
The fastest-growing tailors are not always the most talented.
They are often the most curious.
They never stop asking.
They never stop learning.
Because every great business begins with one powerful question:

"How can I become better than I was yesterday?"
THE END...
What is one question every tailor should ask themselves regularly, but most never do?

Episode 43
TOPIC: SUCCESS HAS MADE SOME TAILORS UNTEACHABLE.

One of the greatest dangers in fashion is not failure...
It is success that convinces you there is nothing left to learn.

The day you begin to believe, "I already know enough," is the day your growth quietly begins to slow down.

1. SUCCESS CAN BE A TERRIBLE TEACHER
A few successful jobs...
A growing customer base...
A little recognition...
And suddenly, some tailors stop listening.

They reject advice.
They avoid training.
They dismiss new ideas.
Not because they know everything...
But because success has made them feel like they do.

2. FASHION NEVER STOPS EVOLVING
Styles change.
Technology changes.
Customer expectations change.
Business methods change.
If fashion keeps moving but you stop learning, the gap between you and the industry will keep growing.

3. HUMILITY IS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
The best fashion designers are often the most curious.
They ask questions.
They observe.
They attend trainings.
They learn from younger designers.
They are confident enough to admit they don't know everything.

4. PRIDE CAN HIDE BEHIND EXPERIENCE
Experience is valuable.
But experience without learning can become limitation.
Don't let the number of years you've been in fashion stop you from discovering a better way to work.

5. STAY A STUDENT
No matter your level:
- improve one skill
- read one book
- learn one technique
- visit one workshop
- ask one question
The tailors who keep learning are usually the ones who keep leading.

FINAL WORD
Your greatest achievement should never become your greatest limitation.

The moment success makes you unteachable... Success has already started leaving you behind.
Because in fashion, the people who stay relevant are not those who know the most...
They are those who never stop learning
THE END...

In your opinion, what causes experienced tailors to stop learning—success, pride, or simply becoming too comfortable?

Episode 42
Topic: YOUR APPRENTICES ARE STUDYING MORE THAN YOUR SEWING

Many fashion masters believe their apprentices are only learning how to sew.
They're not...
Every day, they are studying you.
•They are watching how you speak.
•How you treat customers.
•How you react under pressure.
•How you handle money.
•How you solve problems.

In fact, they may learn more from your behavior than from your sewing.

1. YOU ARE ALWAYS TEACHING
Even when you are not giving instructions.
•Your punctuality teaches.
•Your honesty teaches.
•Your discipline teaches.
•Your attitude teaches.
Leadership is not only what you say, it is what you consistently do.

2. APPRENTICES COPY HABITS BEFORE THEY COPY SKILLS
If they see you:
- disrespect customers,
- make excuses,
- ignore deadlines,
- deliver poor finishing,
- or avoid learning...
Don't be surprised when they do the same after graduation.
People often reproduce the culture they were trained in.

3. YOU ARE BUILDING MORE THAN TAILORS
Every apprentice who leaves your shop carries part of your legacy.
They don't just represent themselves.

In many ways, they represent the values they learned under your guidance.

That is why training should include character as much as craftsmanship.

4. BE THE EXAMPLE YOU WANT TO MULTIPLY
*If you want disciplined apprentices, be disciplined.
*If you want respectful apprentices, be respectful.
*If you want excellent tailors, pursue excellence yourself.
The best lessons are often demonstrated, not spoken.

FINAL WORD
One day, your apprentices will become masters.

The question is:

What kind of masters are you preparing them to become?
Because long after they forget your words, they will remember your example.

And in many cases... they will become it.
THE END....
Looking back at your own training, what habit—good or bad—did you learn from your master that still influences you today?

04/07/2026

Welcome to Fashion Clinic; Your weekly check-up for tailoring and fashion matters.
Episode 41
TOPIC: THE RICHEST THING IN YOUR FASHION BUSINESS IS TRUST

Ask ten tailors what they need most, and many will say "More customers." "More money." "Better machines." "A bigger shop."
Those things are important.
But the richest thing your fashion business can ever possess is trust.

1. TRUST IS WHAT BRINGS CUSTOMERS BACK
A customer may patronize you once because of your designs.
•But they return because they trust you.
•They trust your measurements.
•They trust your finishing.
•They trust your delivery.
•They trust your word.
•That trust is worth more than any advertisement.

2. TRUST IS VALUABLE THAN A DISCOUNT
Many tailors think lowering their prices will attract more customers.
Maybe.
But low prices don't always create loyal customers. Trust does.
People are often willing to pay more when they are confident they won't be disappointed.

3. TRUST IS BUILT IN SMALL MOMENTS
Trust grows when you:
- keep your promises
- communicate honestly
- admit mistakes
- deliver when you said you would
- treat every client with respect
It is built one interaction at a time.

4. TRUST TAKES TIME TO BUILD, BUT MINUTES TO LOSE
One careless mistake. One broken promise.
One dishonest excuse. One ignored customer.
Sometimes that's all it takes to damage a reputation you've spent years building.
Protect your name as carefully as you protect your sewing machine.

5. A TRUSTED TAILOR NEVER TRULY STARTS FROM SCRATCH
When people trust you, they recommend you.
They defend you when mistakes happen.
They return with new orders.
They bring their friends and family.
Trust keeps your business growing even when times are difficult.

FINAL WORD
Machines can break. Fashion trends can change. Customers can relocate.
But a trustworthy name will continue to open doors.
At the end of the day, people don't only remember the clothes you made.
They remember whether they could trust you.
Build your business in such a way that when your name is mentioned, confidence follows.
THE END...
In your opinion, what is the fastest way for a tailor to lose a client's trust—and what is the best way to earn it?

Welcome to Fashion Clinic, your weekly check-up for tailoring and fashion matters.
Episode 40
TOPIC: THE DANGER OF GROWING TOO FAST

Every tailor wants to grow.
A bigger shop. More machines. More employees. More customers.

There is nothing wrong with ambition.
But here's a question we rarely ask:

Are you growing... or are you expanding faster than you can manage?

1. BIGGER IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER
A bigger workshop means:
- higher rent
- higher salaries
- higher utility bills
- more responsibility
Growth should increase your capacity, not just your expenses.

2. MORE ORDERS CAN BECOME A TRAP
Many tailors pray for more customers.
But if your systems are weak, more customers simply mean:
- more delays
- more mistakes
- more complaints
- more pressure
Never let your business grow beyond your ability to serve people well.

3. DON'T BUILD A TEAM YOU CAN'T LEAD
Hiring staff is exciting. Managing people is a different skill.
Before adding more hands, ask yourself:
Can I train them?
Can I supervise them?
Can I pay them consistently?
Growth should bring stability, not confusion.

4. DON'T BUY TO IMPRESS
A new machine is good.
A beautiful studio is good.
But buying things just to look successful can put unnecessary pressure on your business.
Let your purchases solve problems not create them.

5. HEALTHY GROWTH IS SUSTAINABLE GROWTH
A tree doesn't become mighty overnight.
It grows deeper roots before it grows wider branches.
Businesses should do the same.
Build your systems.
Strengthen your finances.
Improve your processes.
Then expand.

FINAL WORD
Growing slowly is not failure.
Growing wisely is success.
Because the goal is not to become the biggest tailor in town...
The goal is to build a fashion business that is still standing many years from now.
THE END...
If your business doubled in size tomorrow, do you think your current systems, finances, and team could handle it? Why or why not?

After 16 weeks of SIWES, it is time to present these wonderful students of Kaduna Polytechnic's Department of Fashion Design and Clothing Technology back to their institution.

Just as rough diamonds pass through the hands of skilled craftsmen before revealing their brilliance, these students came eager to learn and are leaving with sharper skills, deeper knowledge, and greater confidence.

Kaduna Polytechnic, one of Africa's largest technical institutions, entrusted us with a part of their training journey, and we are grateful for the opportunity.

To my students: let the knowledge gained here not remain in your notebooks alone, put it into practice. Be good ambassadors of the fashion industry, uphold professionalism, keep learning, and never stop improving your craft.

Your presence will be missed around Glas-House Lifestyle, but I look forward to seeing you grow into outstanding fashion designers and industry leaders in the years ahead.

Wishing you all success as you move to the next stage of your journey.

20/06/2026

Welcome to Fashion Clinic, your weekly check-up for tailoring and fashion matters
Episode 39
TOPIC: STAY IN YOUR LANE — BUT DON'T STAY IN ONE SPOT

We often hear people say: "Stay in your lane."
And that's good advice.

Don't compare your journey to everyone else's.
Don't get distracted by every trend.
Don't build your business based on pressure from social media. But there is another side to that advice:
Staying in your lane should not mean staying in one spot.

1. YOUR LANE IS FOR PROGRESS, NOT PARKING.
Some tailors use "I'm focusing on my journey" as an excuse to avoid growth.
They stop learning.
They stop improving.
They stop challenging themselves.
Years pass...But nothing changes.
Staying in your lane does not mean standing still.

2. GROWTH SHOULD BE VISIBLE.
Maybe not every day.
Maybe not every month.
But over time, there should be evidence that you're moving:
- Better finishing
- Better customer service
- Better business practices
- Better confidence
- Better results
Progress is proof that you're moving forward.

3. CONTENTMENT IS GOOD — COMPLACENCY IS DANGEROUS.
Be grateful for where you are.
But don't become too comfortable there.
The moment you stop improving because things are "good enough," growth begins to slow down.

4. FOCUS ON YOUR JOURNEY, NOT SOMEONE ELSE'S.
You don't need to move at another tailor's speed. But you should be moving.
Your growth may be slower.
Your resources may be fewer.
That's okay.
The important thing is that you are advancing.

5. SMALL STEPS STILL COUNT.
Not every improvement is dramatic.
Sometimes growth looks like:
- Keeping better records
- Delivering on time more often
- Learning one new technique
- Serving clients more professionally
- Managing money more wisely
Small improvements compound into big results.

FINAL WORD
Don't leave your lane because of envy.
But don't camp there because of comfort.
Stay focused. Stay grateful. Stay disciplined.
And most importantly... Keep moving.
THE END...

What is one area of your tailoring business where you know you have been standing still for too long?
