Some weeks back, I posted that a customer from the Island ordered over 5 pairs of shoes at once without asking for payment on delivery.

Shortly after, someone jumped into my inbox with just two words "God when?"

I smiled, but let me tell you the truth behind that.

Nobody just wakes up and buys 5 or 10 pairs at once. It starts small. One pair today. Maybe another next month. Step by step, they grow to a point where they can confidently revamp their entire wardrobe in one sitting and their bank account won’t even flinch.

That’s how it works in life too. You build gradually.

But here’s where many get it wrong!
They try to jump steps.
They rush.
They bend to pressure.
They compromise their standards just to "belong."
And that shortcut? It always costs more in the end.

I learned my lesson too.
There was a time I introduced Nigerian-made clothing, hoping to impress.
But customers kept complaining that the quality wasn’t matching the pictures. My brand suffered. I pulled back immediately.

Since then, I made a decision that I won’t compromise my standard.

I don’t water down quality to “look cheap” or to impress anybody. Because when the quality falls short, will those customers come back? Exactly.

So here’s my word to you,
Don’t give in to pressure. Don’t rush your process. Keep building at your pace, at your standard, at your own timeline.

Your time will surely come.

Growth is in phases. Build it right. Protect your standard.

You can NEVER BE UNLUCKY for 365 days only if you keep trying.

Last year, somebody messaged me on Facebook. He picked different shoe designs from my wall and asked if they were available. I confirmed the available ones, and then he ghosted me.

After some time, he came back again, repeated the same process, and ghosted me again.

I won’t lie, I wasn’t happy with such behaviour. But I kept quiet because of customer service.

Fast forward to this year, he came again with the same pattern. At first, I wanted to tell him outright that I wasn’t comfortable with it. But on second thought, I simply replied with the available designs. From there, we moved on to talk about his shoe size and payment method.

I was the one who told him upfront that I don’t accept payment on delivery. I mean, I can’t keep putting in so much work to build this profile and brand only for someone to start requesting POD especially on this personal account I’ve worked hard to build.

He calmly told me not to worry. He said he already knew I was legit. I asked him how he came to that conclusion, but he just smiled. Till today, that question has no answer.

He asked when to expect delivery, requested my details, and we finalized.

Now imagine if I had made an outburst earlier about his ghosting attitude, I could have lost a customer forever.

I later figured out it simply took him a very long time to trust me with his money. All this while, he was probably checking my profile, watching how consistent I was, looking for that small sign of “yes, I can trust you.”

And that’s when it hit me!

This thing called showing up don’t ever joke with it. No matter how tough it gets, keep showing up. Someone is always watching, and when the time is right, they’ll come around.

Never stop showing up, because even the silent watchers are potential buyers.

The shoes were perfect. The price was fair.
But this customer rejected them Because the box wasn’t branded.

This is why I fear Payment on Delivery.

A customer ordered three pairs of shoes.
Clean shoes. Neat packaging.
But our branded cartons had finished.

So I told him clearly:
“Oga, the shoes are intact, but I’ll be using a different carton.”
He said, “No problem.”

Problem started when the rider arrived.

After checking the shoes, he said,
“I can’t accept them. They’re not in the carton I saw online.”

I said, “But I told you. You said okay.”

He said, “Okay doesn’t mean I won’t price it down.
If it’s not coming in branded carton, you’ll remove 10k.”

Ten thousand Naira.
Because of a box.

Carton wey no even cost 3k.
Shoes still intact. No damage. Nothing missing.

I was shocked.

Well at the end of the day I asked my rider to return the shoes back to me.

I don’t blame customers.
Maybe they think Payment on Delivery means they can misbehave.
Maybe they know the seller is more desperate to close the sale.

But let me say this
The stress isn’t small at all.

If that same customer had paid before delivery,
He would’ve taken the shoes and walked away happy.
But once they know money hasn’t entered,
They change. They look for faults. They try to negotiate nonsense.

I’m tired.

Yes, POD sells faster.
But it also drains you mentally.

Because anything you see, you go use am hold body.
Even when you explained everything,
Even when you’re honest from day one
They’ll still try to turn your hustle into their playground.

This past week has shown me something:
People don’t just test the product…
They test your patience.

And honestly, some of these experiences?
They no be joke.

Yes!
POD might increase your sales,
But be ready because it also increases your stress level.

Not all customers are wicked,
But some? They use your hustle as leverage.
Stay firm. Stay clear. Set boundaries.
And protect your peace.
