Watching artisans work on traditionally dyed fabrics today reminded me how deeply rooted textile making is in African history.
Long before modern textile machines and industrial finishing, fabrics were processed entirely by hand using techniques passed down through generations.
One of the most fascinating parts of the process is how the fabric is beaten repeatedly after dyeing and drying. This isn’t just done for decoration it helps soften the cotton, relax the fibers, smooth the texture, and prepare the fabric for its final finish.
The process is physically demanding, time-consuming, and incredibly labour intensive.
It made me realize that behind every handmade textile is strength, patience, craftsmanship, and years of inherited knowledge. Fashion is not just clothing it is history, culture, and human labour woven together.
