We often point fingers at patriarchal systems for the persistence of harmful cultural practices in Africa, from certain widowhood rites to female ge***al mutilation (FGM). But what if we also acknowledge the uncomfortable truth: that women themselves, particularly older women, sometimes play a significant role in enforcing and perpetuating these very traditions?

In many communities, grandmothers, aunts, and mothers are the ones who uphold these practices, often believing they are preserving culture, ensuring social acceptance, or protecting younger women.

How do we empower women to challenge practices that harm when they are simultaneously the custodians of tradition?
