The Tale of Two Chairmen: The "Glitch" vs. The "Gavel"
The difference between a Mahmood Yakubu INEC and a Joash Amupitan INEC is becoming impossible to ignore. It is the difference between a velvet glove and an iron fist.
The Yakubu Method: Hope as a Strategy
A Mahmood Yakubu will give you every reason to believe. He will wrap you in confidence and make you trust the "process." He will travel the globe, standing at Chatham House, laying out polished promises of a digital, foolproof election.
He introduced the BvAS and the IReV. He made electronic transmission feel like a sacred law. He wouldn't delist parties or meddle openly; he played the long game. He led you to the very gates of the promised land, let you touch the handle, and then—at the 11th hour—delivered the fatal blow with two sentences:
1. “There was a technical glitch.”
2. “Go to court if you are not satisfied.”
He broke your heart quietly, after making you fall in love with the dream.
The Amupitan Method: No Room for Illusion
A Joash Amupitan led INEC is something else entirely. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and a Professor of Law, he doesn't use the language of "hope", he uses the language of "power."
An Amupitan will not even let you see the promised land. To him, hope is a security risk. While Yakubu tried to look neutral, Amupitan’s critics point to his swift, unapologetic interpretations of the law that often leave opposition parties stranded.
Look at the precedents: whether it’s the controversial handling of party leadership disputes or the rigid interpretation of court orders (recalling the legal battles like Marafa v. APC, where technicalities overrode popular will), Amupitan executes without pause.
* Where Yakubu pampers, Amupitan chastises.
* Where Yakubu smiles, Amupitan warns.
* One gave you hope and broke it. The other ensures you never have hope to begin with.
As we head toward the 2027 finish line, the question remains: Which is more dangerous? The man who deceives you with a dream, or the man who tells you the dream was never yours to begin with?
May we not look back at the "technical glitches" of 2023 with nostalgia.
