CHIKE AND HIS STEPMOTHER — PART TWO
Chike could barely sleep after discovering his mother's letter.
The following morning, he confronted his father.
“Dad, why didn't you tell me?”
His father looked at the letter and sighed.
“Your mother asked me to keep it until you were old enough to understand.”
Chike's hands trembled.
His mother had written that she wanted Amaka to look after Chike if anything happened to her.
Amaka had been her closest friend.
She had promised Chike's mother that she would never allow him to feel abandoned.
Suddenly, years of anger began to collapse inside Chike.
He remembered every meal Amaka had prepared.
Every night she had waited for him.
Every school bill she had helped pay.
Every time she defended him when relatives criticized him.
That evening, Chike found Amaka sitting alone outside the house.
“Ma…”
Amaka looked up in surprise.
It was the first time he had called her that.
Chike's eyes filled with tears.
“I am sorry.”
Amaka said nothing.
“I thought you came here to replace my mother. I didn't understand that you were only trying to keep the promise you made to her.”
Amaka began to cry.
She pulled Chike into a warm embrace.
“I never wanted to replace your mother,” she said. “I only wanted you to know that you were loved.”
Chike finally understood.
A family is not always held together by blood.
Sometimes, it is held together by the people who choose to stay.
Years later, Chike became a successful businessman.
Whenever people asked him about the secret behind his success, he always gave the same answer:
“My mother gave me life. And my stepmother taught me that love can also mean sacrifice.”
And from that day forward, Chike never called Amaka his stepmother again.
He simply called her Mama.
