A framed old map of the Netherlands, originally published in 1570 in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, widely considered to be the first modern atlas, by cartographer Abraham Ortelius.

Theatrum Orbis Terrarum shaped the future of cartography throughout the 17th century. It utilized text and maps to fully explore the known world. The maps are incredibly detailed and are a combination of science and art that has rarely been surpassed in the history of mapmaking: they feature Renaissance-style cartouches and decorative work including sea vessels, mythological monsters, birds, medallions, and more.

This particular vintage print was done on fabric in Den Haag, the Netherlands, by the firm Van Rijmenam (as can be read in the bottom left, just under the map), likely some time halfway through the 20th century. It was created for Instituut Schoevers, a well-known Dutch school of commerce (see stamp in the bottom right).

This map of the Netherlands features latin text and all the old Dutch names for cities, rivers, lakes and regions. It is made in colours of light blue and light brown. It is in excellent condition.

Contrary to modern maps of Holland, which are vertically oriented, this old map is horizontally oriented. Comes in a frame: 64 cm wide. 47.5 cm tall and weighs approximately 2.45 kg.

In the shop: a rare, complete East-German teacup with saucer and plate. Made from porcelain by VEB Porzellanwerk Reichenbach in the GDR between 1968 and 1990, as can be determined from the stamp on the bottoms of the cup and its plates. Designed in colours of brown, gold and white, with a garland motif on the inside of the rim and a raised basket-weave motif all around the white body of the cup.

A real collector's item and an amazing gift for lovers of quality porcelain and vintage teacups.

Measurements:
Teacup: 6.2 cm tall, 10 cm wide at the mouth, 4.5 cm wide at the base. Its capacity is circa 100 ml.
Saucer: diameter of 15 cm.
Plate: diameter of 19 cm.
The complete set weighs approximately 460 grams.

Some more of our recent majolica finds, freshly cleaned. And a remarkable purple Strehla vase! The white plate is Wedgwood, the colourful pitcher is Sylvac ware. Does anybody know the maker of the white serving dish with the green leaves? (We are stumped)

Yesterday we found 2 rare little majolica gems from the late 19th and early 20th century. A German cake stand by Georg Schmider from around 1910 and a French vase by Gustave de Bruyn from around 1890, made in Fives-Lille. As Drew Pritchard would say: happy days, over the moon!

Today was King’s Day in the Netherlands. Everyone is out and about, wears orange and sells their stuff on the streets. Vintage Kadijk joined the fun and scored some wonderful vintage items, from silver-plated Douwe Egbert coffee cans to a green ribbed glass vase, a paper weight and a Hong Kong oil lamp. Does anybody know the maker of the ceramic figurine? In the meantime the other half of Vintage Kadijk was in Poland and scored some classic West-German vases and cups!

Yesterday was our first time mudlarking. On Gran Canaria! We walked for hours and had a lot of fun. We found: beautiful abalone shells, rocks, glass shards in shades of green, blue, orange and even purple, a plastic mini hippo, a glass marble and even a mysterious round metal object that may be a weathered coin. The sun was shining. It was a good day.

New in our Etsy shop:
A vintage Dutch silver-plated canister or caddy made for the Dutch coffee brand Douwe Egberts by the renowned Hooijkaas silver factory that was based in the city of Schoonhoven from 1874 until 2008. This lovely piece was made in the 1960s. It is marked with the "DE" logo of Douwe Egberts on the rim of the lid and features an intricate embossed design that depicts the typical hustle and bustle of country life in the old Low Lands: we see a covered wagon with horse and hard working people, while others are having fun and enjoying a drink or other pleasures. It is easy to loose yourself in the plentiful details of this wonderful little piece and discover new things every time you take a closer look.

10.5 cm tall and 8 cm wide, with a lid of 4 by 8 cm. Weighs 192 gram. In gorgeous condition.

One of our customers in the States bought this periwinkle-coloured vase from us. Never could we have imagined that she would use it to display glass flowers in, in such a beautiful, thoughtful way! It’s really rewarding for us to see our customers truly enjoying the vintage items we dig up. We look forward to many more such amazing surprises in 2023, and giving more old objects a new life. Happy New Year!

New!
A rare mid-century retro ceramic plate in dark brown and green colours, with a central dot design that looks like an eye. Could be used to serve small dishes, as a decorative piece in the home or to add to a collection of German pottery. Made by Carstens Tönnieshof in West Germany, likely in the 1960s or 70s. On the bottom of the base we think it reads "605-2", but the marking is faint and difficult to discern.

In excellent condition, no damage whatsoever.
