We'd like to share our new book: flower, fruit, leaf, husk and root, experiments in growing colour
Naan Rijks has been cultivating dye plants in Amsterdam since 2011 and I joined her in 2017. This publication documents our collaboration through conversations, photographs of artworks, the studio, gardening activities, and recipes to share our knowledge and inspire curiosity. We wish to learn more about colour and about life.

Designed & published in 2024 by Alex Walker as part of his project 'Mumbling Matter'.
Barbara Collé has transcribed the conversations between all of us highlighting meaningful reflections and understandings in a beautiful way through the dialogues.
Covers are screen printed together with Brent Dahl and we used plant based paint. This book is printed in a limited run of 200 copies.

With deep emotion, today I want to share with all of you here, with the universe, the most (personally) profound project I was part of.
It’s about life and ways of relating with each other and how we have learned that by building loving relationships we can shift our lives.

flower, fruit, leaf, husk and root: experiments in growing colour
is a publication about years of friendship, research, evolution, wisdom and life learnings between Naan Rijks, myself and all the species of plants we have been cultivating over the years.

This book came to life thanks to Alex Walker.
Alex; I can’t stop thanking you, it has been a great pleasure to work on this together. Gracias totales!
Published in 2024 as part of Alex’s project ‘Mumbling Matter’

Beloved friend Barbara Collé has transcribed hours of conversations between us highlighting the most meaningful reflections and understandings in emotional and fun texts.

This book will be launched in Amsterdam sometime in April (will announce soon!) and you will be able to get a copy very soon, yeah!

Thank you to everyone who has been witnessing and collaborating with us since 2017.
Family friends and colleagues all my love, les amo mucho 💚

NOVEMBER 16 & 17
Revealing hidden colours in nature

This will be the 10th gathering at the TextielMuseum
I was kindly invited to facilitate seasonal masterclasses in relationship with local plants (from Tilburg), their natural colourants and how these will bond/connect to textiles & fibres (paper).
This collaboration between the museum, myself, the surrounding plants and all the lovely people who have joined began last year. During these gatherings we will learn and experiment using natural dyes and making ink; we will extract colours using small amounts of plant material growing in the surroundings to find out the potential of their natural colourants creating, in this way, a deeper connection with the natural world at different moments during the year.
I am setting up this research, leading and guiding each group to reveal together the chromatic spectrum found in Tilburg in order to create an archive of colours/shades/tones coming from in and around the Textile Museum during this specific time of the year.

What are plant colorants revealing?
We interact with plants and wonder about their inner wisdom by exchanging, transforming and observing we can understand more about life and how the different factors in our surroundings have an influence on us.

Those invisible colors exist and are ever changing

THIS IS TIMELESS WISDOM

OCTOBER 26 & 27 - Textiel Museum
Revealing hidden colours of nature: Autumn in Tilburg

During this masterclass Lucila Kenny invites you to re-discover an intimate and empowered relationship with plants through a series of investigations. This is an introduction to the process of deriving colours from plants that are growing around us and how we relate to them by exploring their dye-pigment qualities.
This class is part of an ongoing research on ancient practices that use natural dye plants and the exploration of a bigger range of native materials and seasonal waste to learn its properties and possibilities. Every material used to produce these colours is provided by the earth and respects the land and the traditions that inspire them.

GROWING BLUE is a collection of 102 filter papers and cloths that were used as part of the process of extracting indigo pigment from leaves of the Woad (Isatis tinctoria) plant. These leaves were harvested between June 2020 and December 2021 by Lucila Kenny - www.lucilakenny.com - and Naan Rijks, from plants they are growing in the communal garden next to their studio, as part of their project Painting Plants in Amsterdam - www.paintingplants.nl - These filters show the residual colour, after the pigment has been decanted and used to make paint. They are artefacts which capture a moment in time and an alchemic encounter with the plant.

Dear friends,

On Wednesday 15th February, between 15:00-16:00 (CET), myself, Naan Rijks and Alex Walker would like to invite you to join us in introducing our project: Growing Blue.
Growing Blue is a microsite which hosts a collection of 102 filter papers and cloths that were used as part of the process of extracting Indigo pigment from leaves of the Woad (Isatis tinctoria) plant, for the purposes of making natural inks and dyes.
The Woad leaves were harvested between June 2020 and December 2021 by Lucila Kenny and Naan Rijks, from plants they are growing in the garden next to AGALAB (Amsterdam Grafisch Atelier), as part of their research project ‘Painting Plants’. These filters show the residual colour, after the pigment powder has been decanted and used to make inks. They are artefacts which capture a moment in time and an alchemic encounter with the plant.

We will host a live online conversation where we will introduce and contextualise the project, demonstrate the website, and invite questions and dialogue. We welcome you to participate with us or listen along in the background if you prefer.

You can join us via zoom at the following link:

Growing Blue is published in 2023 by Mumbling Matter — a project highlighting artistic practices that are grounded in resourceful, do-it-yourself and collective methods of production. More info: www.mumblingmatter.info

REVEALING HIDDEN COLOURS OF NATURE II

I'd love to thank to all the 15 participants who joined this two day masterclass at the TextielMuseum in Tilburg, NL.

I feel so inspired by all of you and the time we spent together!

We talked about natural and chemical colours, what is colour? Where do they come from? How can we look at our surroundings with other eyes?
We dyed natural fabrics using plant extracts and food waste
We walked around the neighbourhood of the museum in Tilburg to recognize the flora growing at this time of the year
We harvested small amounts of flowers and leaves
We made ink from them

Based on my personal experience with natural colours and the experience of all of you: we create knowledge.
Spreading this colour plant wisdom is what keeps me AWAKE & ACTIVE

There is another masterclass coming in June 14+15 !

'NEW RELATIONSHIPS'
JUNE 2 - 9 - 16 - 23
Thursday's evening / online gatherings

~
Learn from plants to find the richness inside yourself.

If you are longing for re-discovering what’s inside yourself and how through these conscious observations you can strengthen your thoughts in order to create a better reality, you are very welcomed to join weekly online gatherings
New relationships is a proposal to invite 'us' during four gatherings, to share about the connection with yourself and the connection with your surroundings. Our different interactions with the environment and the intentions we have can very much shape - how we see - how we are experiencing life now.
Through meeting, learning and experimenting weekly on how to actually produce colour from an interaction with a plant, we can start wondering for example about: what is colour?
or discovering plants growing in between the asfalt in your neighbourhood which could possibly be transformed into a vibrant shade.
We all work and discover at our own rhythms and learn from each other's stories.
I am there to guide you with technical information about the processes.

APRIL 2022
FOUR ONLINE GATHERINGS (Thursday evening's)
*Sessions will be recorded for those who cannot join everytime*

I’d like to invite you to re-discover an intimate and empowered relationship with plants through a series of investigations. This is an introduction to processes through which you can derive colors from plants that are growing around you and how we relate to them by exploring their dye-pigment qualities. We will be using non-toxic plant mordants, locally foraged plants and food waste. During the gatherings we will create a broad catalog of shades that will reflect our intimate dialogues with colors and share all the recipes through which these colors come to life.

We will:
* gather to explore our own different ways of interacting with the surrounding
* how can we integrate nature to home
* discuss the visibility of invisible colors
* how, for example, one kind of food waste can create a rainbow of shades
We will all play the role of teachers and students at the same time
We will record our experiments and share: questions, answers and insights once a week
We will observe chromatic and emotional results
We will propose small changes that might have a big impact in our lives.

MAPPING NEUKOLLN

These images reflect a very special gathering we had during the weekend in Berlin.
With a lovely group of ladies we walked along Kiehlufer and Weigandufer in Neukolln on a warm sunny afternoon collecting: leaves, berries and flowers which potentially had dyeing properties. We also decided to simultaneously collect all the trash we found in the streets during the walk and came back to WIR WIR with two big full bags; this action made us and some neighbours very happy.
I invite you to have a look at all the colours we could extract!
Thank you Kun Liang for being there documenting these workshop's :)

Also thank you to all the lovely people who joined both workshops, I want to come back very soon for more seasonal encounters with the surrounding.

If you live in Berlin and want yo join next time please drop me a message!

The first man-made pigment was created accidentally in the mid-1800s by a scientist researching a treatment for Malaria. Ever since this discovery, the textile industry has been dominated by fast, cheap and synthetic production, upending centuries of natural dyeing processes and working its way to be one of the world’s largest polluters in the process.
Lucila Kenny is interested in making people think about what waste is and the power of not throwing away by extracting colorants. This invites one to reflect on consumption in society. Weeds and food waste are there but it seems we don’t want them. By extracting colorants and transforming them, it gives us the possibility of noticing what’s around us. What do we take for granted? A w**d growing beside a river turns out it hides a bright unique colour that appears through a magical process. We live in this environment and are connected to all these materials and forms of life so we should use them to express ourselves.

This workshop will take place in English.
