Hope you've....
..taken some headwear with you today to keep you dry and comfy.

The weather around this time of year can be so misleading here in the Netherlands. One day feels like early summer, than all of a sudden the other like late autumn. But I guess it's all in the month, here they say:

'April doet wat ie wilt.'
Freely translated meaning:
April is unreliable.....hope your called May😉

While I'm trying to decide which jacket to wear, I realise how great it is to own a versatile headweardesign that fits multiple jackets( colours )from my wardrobe.

I guess I'm back to my earflap cap with lining ✌🏻 what are you wearing?

Upcycling ♻️ in headwear...
..means to be inspired and use what comes along. But it also means a certain kind of uniqueness, which makes it all the more desirable. Even an H&M product can become a unique product by upcycling it 😉

Such a pity that these new colour combinations, from curtain samples, don't suit my complexion. Hopefully I'll have enough material from this lining to make 3 pieces. Each with a different colour combination in the brim and tip. 2 are already done, 1 more to go!

With thanks 🙏🏻 to my supporters wildetuin

The other day I read ...
...that I should be thinking about how my post is useful to you. You won't believe me if I told you, but that kept me from posting this beautiful picture of wearing my flat cap design, yesterday, but really it did!
Now sitting at my breakfast table looking out the window into the garden, I don't even know why, 'cause it's so simple. You want to be protective of yourself and brace yourself against rain 🌧️, wind 🌬️ or sun ☀️ and for this purpose you wear headwear, which I make, locally in my studio in Amsterdam. Tara 🪄
There are many more hatmakers out there, all with their own signature, style & specialty so you have the choice to find your perfect match right here in the Netherlands! For this purpose check out Arjans profile, he is a great designer, his work is immaculate, the shirt and jacket he's wearing on the picture are actually also made by him.
As for the flat cap, now it's getting warmer, we could make it from all denim?
Let me know what you think?
💕✌🏻🍀

The other day...
.. I read that deadstock material doesn't exist. It's a multi facet topic, but more about that in the comments, maybe, if you like to talk about it?!
What I wanted to elaborate on is what I mean when I'm talking about using deadstock materials. Materials like those used for this flat cap were donated to the studio, either by people who had them in their stock but didn't use them and gave them to me instead of throwing them away. You could call them discarded materials too but that sounds like I picked them out of the trash .....
...and this jewel of a cap, which is worn here by , thanks 🙏🏻 once more, looks far to classy, if I may say so🥰

These deadstock fabrics I use in this cap design are limited and also get used for other headwear designs, so the stash is shrinking fast. But this flat cap can be adjusted to your individual style, taste and colour scheme by using other materials when making your cap to fit.

Did you...
...find the bunny 🐰 yet?
If not, by now you'd probably want to be wearing one of these caps with earflaps to keep you warm in the extended 😉 search.
Have I told you all about these casual wool caps? Ok here we go:

Very unique pieces= only 3 of each colour combination available.
Local product= which I make when you order it.
Sustainable= made of virgin deadstock materials and surplus colour samples.

I think 🤔 we can say they are green fashion as well as slow🐌 fashion, what you say?

Ok, so let's talk about the elephant....
... in the room.... price point!
Nobody ever talks about it, but selling your product at the right price is a headache, especially when upcycled & it's going to make me change a couple of things! Most of us don't realise that if we buy something for €40 in a store then most probably the owner paid €16-18 for the product themselves. Stores in Europe handle a price point between 2.2- 2.6, meaning they multiply the price by those didgets before reselling them. Very understandable as they too have to pay rent, electricity, salaries, taxes enz...
And now here is the 🐘!!!!
Producing locally, paying local rent, electricity, salaries, taxes enz... the selling price is always higher than if for e.g. producing in China. My products will therefy be far more expensive in that store, than any product from China. And that is one of the reasons you sadly don't find me in local stores 😔. My prices don't have those margins and therefore store owners don't find my products interesting enough. Of course this also could have something to do with my quality as a designer and marketeer or our willingness to pay a certain price for locally produced apparel, but those are different discussions.
Until today I worked with a 30%- 40% margin for 2nd party sellers which is than mostly on commission basis, meaning products will be returned to me if not sold( many pro & cons here too) but this kept my product prices low enough to still be attractive to a broad community, which is something really dear to my heart. On the other hand this is also one of the reasons that keeps me from making a living with my brand.
I'm looking into different solutions. Momentarily I'm working on a graduated price point an idea offered to me by . You'll hear if I found away around the elephant, but I'm afraid prices will rise one way or the other😕 if I want to give myself a fair chance to actually make a salary.

Love to hear ideas, suggestions, tips, comments...
How do you work your price point?
Please 🙏🏻 don't be shy

Crimson red...
.. seems to be one of 2 red tones( the other being burgundy) that suit my colour type. Well luckily this wonderful body warmer falls into that category, 'cause even though I shortly thought spring 🌱 was coming I'm back in my warm clothing & thermals 😅 while working at the studio.

Because your natural colour pallet is found in your skin, your hair and your eyes, headwear is also much easier to choose when you know your colour type.
In an analysis the focus lies on hue, value & contrast and the chroma. Mind me, I learned this by reading the great information on and .In the end, after being stuck in between 2 colour types, I used this wonderful online tool

If you're wearing....
..the earflaps up or down one thing is guaranteed, your wearing one of 3 in it's colour combination, worldwide!

Sustainable because they are made of discarded and sample materials!

Locally designed and produced, especially for the dimensions of the fabric, in my studio in Amsterdam the Netherlands.

Made to order to fit your size.

I think we can call this slow fashion with a green 💚, what do you say?

Still waiting,....
.. watching the flowers from inside, to feel better...but I'm getting there?

When the sun 🌞 came out last wednesday my seriously stunning friend was visiting at the studio and I was seriously warm in my winter cap. So the next day I grabbed my unlined summer ⛱️ cap, like yeaaah💃🏻...

Luckily I have a studio close by home with my own loo, cause I'm done looking at the plants, let's see how it goes🐌🐌🐌

Upcycling ♻️ can be....
....in the little things too. A lot of my haberdashery was donated and often instead of going out to buy something new I dive into the vast variety of ribbons to see how they can be of use in my ongoing projects.

Welke upcycle ♻️ diadeem ga jij maken,
chique, vrolijk of feestelijk?❔?

These will probably be the last days....
...for this great colourful cap with earflaps. Here in the Netherlands the temperatures are rising , mind me, in the morning and evenings it's still pretty cold, but as soon as the wind lays low and the sun comes out, up go the flaps!

I have enough material for 2 more, made to measure, caps in this colourcombination. Pretty exclusive for casual wear, don't you think?

The material is a combination of deadstock bouclé & cotton flannel ( both donated) and cut-off wool colour samples( a miss match to another project). All materials are pre-consumer and of course the caps are made here in Amsterdam in my studio.

Funny note: The design of the cap was made to fit the dimensions of the material.

A limited edition design...
..with a story

This is my personal hommage to the classic beret,
a renewal to it’s form with a modern approach honouring the french style, it's is called:
’S’il vous pli’.

Please pleat/ fold,
can also translate to the huge task we have ahead of us, as a community of designers, makers and crafters in the fashion industry. As a highly polluting industry, it is our chore to adjust our ways to become more sustainable and future-proof.

There are many ways as a designer to become more sustainable, my way is to work, partly, with discarded fabrics. Sometimes used and other times new, the so called deadstock fabrics. Sometimes cut-offs other times a few meters. I collect and store them until the perfect combination comes along.
So most of the fabrics I used in the ’S’il nous pli’ were gifted to me over the years.

new : petersham ribbon
new : polyester thread
2021 : embroidery thread/ gifted by the husband of his wife, a crafter
2021 : virgin cut-offs lining/ a barrel full gifted by an artists mother
new : virgin fusible canvas interfacing/ a remnant from school
2004 : virgin boucle fabric, a couple of meters/ gifted by an acquaintance artists mother
2016: virgin denim fabric, a couple of meters/ gifted from a closed down dutch denim factory

Making changes towards another way of seeing, creating and working can at times be laborious and painful, just like putting a pleat into unpleated material. It takes effort because you have to fold yourself over but:

S’il vous pli,
it will be worth our and the future times!

Just because....
..you might be wondering, here is a little bit of information about this pleated beret.

The deadstock denim, once used in a childrens denim production, was leftover after the production plant closed and part of it was offerd to me. It's a wonderful quality, which if I had to buy it new, would make this pleated denim headwear collection unaffordable.

I measure, fold, pin and stitch each single pleat here in my studio, making it a very time intensive process. On the other hand, it's also the reason why all designs of the pleated collection can be customised to personal taste and style.

If you want pleats stitched in 🍒 red, let's do it!
A smooth wool fabric instead of a bouclé, no problem, which colour❓
Let me know what your favourite combination would look like, but hurry up, 'cause there is a limit to the denim....
.. it's a limited edition

Can't wait...
..to pleat this beret in a wool fabric. The deadstock denim that is now on top and stitched in bright yellow will than be replaced to match the deadstock bouclé fabric on the side or any other bouclé of your choice. This piece is definitely a unique unisex statement piece!

Casual menswear...
..or what do you say? This wool hat/ wool buckethat with earflaps is a definite unisex design.
Did you know that I officially named it, winter troop hat, after those tropical safari helmets worn on expeditions in the jungles of our world....well this is the winter variation.
So don't be shy, this is the most stylish way to face our modern city jungles😉

Have you ...
...seen those cute 🥰 little buttons on these 💯 cooked wool winter hats? You might think that I bought them, matching the strings that tie the ear warmers under the chin, perfectly.

But actually the buttons were part of a bunch of haberdashery that were donated to the studio and the strings were remnants from the time when I still made clothing( we're talking 12 years or more).

How cute 🥰 ...
...is this?
I just love ❤️ these kind of things. This mural is part of a huge mosaic in Zaandam Zuid, located in a bicycle 🚲 tunnel. As far as I understood they have recently renovated part of it. It's like pixel art on a really large scale, each tile has one colour. Everytime I cycle here I feel like taking pictures, this makes me so happy. You'll probably will see more of this, 'cause it's like a skyline with different images. I really wonder what it will look like on a sunny ☀️ day. Until now it has always been cloudy when I passed by.

Tada🌷

13/02/2024

Working with....

cut-off materials, you might say left overs, can result in beautiful outcomes, let's say headwear 😉. Single unique pieces can be created like this resulting in a hat that literally nobody has an exact copy of.

For the maker though this can be a challenging task. In hat making we work on the bias so it's the puzzle of fitting the pattern parts on those cut offs 🧩often resulting in adjustments of the pattern parts which of course has influence on colour composition and/ or form of the design.

I absolutely 💓 this kind of work. It gives me great pleasure to work with materials others see as discarded or trash. You might say, I like to prove them wrong 😉 but it's actually more about the challenge, towards myself, of creating something wearable. Nevertheless the sustainable aspect does play a role and has, except for a short period in my life, always plaid a role.

It started with furnishing my room/ apartment when I left home to live on myself at 17. I had little funds and found the things I needed on the curb, at second hand stores and on markets. This quickly expanded to my wardrobe and to my projects at art school. My favourite material in those days, velvet curtains, they make beautiful pants 👖. In those days it was a fund💸 thing, these days it's a heart 💖 thing.

While most people might think that working with deadstock, cut-offs, samples, post consumer clothing and other discarded materials is a cheap way to get the resources needed for making a product/ hat they are highly mistaken! It would be far cheaper to buy the needed materials on the meter, pin a pattern and get going. Working with discarded materials brings various 👣 steps along before we actually get to the 'get going' point. And depending on the category of discarded materials these steps vary. I will write ✍🏻 more about this later for now

wishing you a great 🍀 day

Have you ...

I used to think it's a Dutch thing (mainly the rain🌧️ part) , but these days's it's hard to distinguishe between weather and climate.
Anyway, don't want to get you down, saying that, a colourful hat also helps lift the moods, very win win 😂

Have a lovely weekend you'll

My Story

I design & produce headgear, caps, beanies, berets, hats and more. My passion is working with patterns and abstracting these creating modern hatwear with a twist. Also I love to upgrade and recycle, creating designs that are therefore different and unique, at times using deadstock or cut offs making many designs limited.

I believe in slow fashion, which is why I don’t design new collections every 4 month or 1/2 year and try to make timeless pieces, which of course doesn’t always work. Everything gets produced in my tiny home studio in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

I love what I do and am grateful, that even with my handicap this is still, or again, possible. I have learned that time is limited and it gives me the greatest pleasure to spend it, creating things that people love to wear.

Thank you all.
