IN.DEPENDENCE is a collection of slightly altered everyday objects that aim to start a dialog about our relationship with smart phones, and how they have affected our environment.
The classic “THONET” chair collection, stands as a statement of how the phone has become an extension of our body.
Smart phones are undeniably becoming more than a pure convenience or luxury. They have become a necessity in our everyday life, helping people and places be more connected than ever before. Ironically, it seems these devices are simultaneously achieving the opposite.
IN.DEPENDENCE showcases the absurdity of the omnipresence of phones in different situations, and how their ubiquitousness can be unethical and even dangerous. At the same time, it suggests possible ways of readjusting social habits to encourage people to leave their phones and reconnect.
The project is a follow up to the thesis “Digital intervention in social interaction - the impact of technology on social behaviour and interaction” - an in-depth research about how technological developments have played a great role in shaping humanity and its relationship with the environment.
