Rosa is een links politieke boekhandel, gespecialiseerd in anarchisme, feminisme, socialisme en verschillende vormen van activisme. Het assortiment bestaat uit tweedehands, nieuwe en antiquarische boeken, tijdschriften, t-shirts, speldjes, buttons, opnaaiers, kaartjes en muziek. Rosa is een non-commerciële stichting met als doelstelling de bevordering van het politieke bewustzijn en de maatschappe

lijke betrokkenheid in Noord-Nederland. Daarnaast wil zij bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van een gelijkwaardige maatschappij met een zelfbepaald leven. Een egalitaire samenleving komt niet vanzelf, en de strijd daarvoor begint bij bewustwording. De medewerkers bepalen gezamenlijk de koers en verdelen onderling de taken: ni dieu, ni maître! Toen Amitav Ghosh onderzoek deed voor zijn romantrilogie over o***m was hem al duidelijk hoe die kleine plant, de papaverplant, de loop van de wereldgeschiedenis heeft beïnvloed. Na De vloek van de nootmuskaat is hij er opnieuw in gedoken en ontdekte hij dat zelfs zijn eigen identiteit en familiegeschiedenis onmiskenbaar verweven zijn met papaver. De handel in o***m werd opgezet door het Britse Rijk, maar ook de VOC verdiende haar geld ermee. Ghosh vindt o***m zelfs terug bij het ontstaan van enkele van de grootste bedrijven en machtigste families en prestigieuze instellingen ter wereld.

Rook en as is tegelijkertijd een reisverslag, een essay over kolonialisme, kapitalisme, drugs en verslaving en een traktaat over wie de macht heeft om de geschiedenis op te schrijven. The author, Mikola Dziadok, was born in 1988 and, as an activist of the democratic movement, spent 10 years behind bars for his beliefs.

Part of the stories was written by Mikola while in captivity, and part after his release. A distinct section among the essays is occupied by Mikola Dziadok’s reflections on the nature of power relations in Ancient Greek myths, written based on what he read in the prison library. “The Colors of the Parallel World” reveals the true parallel world of the Belarusian prison system: with its evil and kindness, joy and betrayal, honesty and treachery.
