Storytelling in textiles. One of our greatest inspiration when we design for MOMIQ - design.
Hand-woven fabrics are used Suzani’s, which are embroided pieces of cloth are woven in narrow strips. Most current-day pieces are a silk/cotton blend: a silk warp is most usual, with cotton wefts. In some satin-weave pieces the weft is also silk. Occasional ground fabrics are all cotton, especially for pieces expected to get hard use, such as horse covers. The fabrics are often lightly dyed to produce a soft beige tint--a so-called "tea wash." Occasionally other colors are used for the ground fabrics.

For large suzanis, several of the fabric strips are first sewn loosely together and the pattern is drawn on them; then they are taken apart so that two or more family members or friends can work on the embroidery simultaneously. Later when the panels are rejoined, the pattern parts may not match perfectly, and extra stitches may be added in the areas along the seams. It's the old, traditional approach in this hand-crafted art form 💛

Chair Violet Victoria belongs to a set of two late Gustavian Swedish chairs from the first half of 1800. One is alreay sold but we have one beauty left. It has a curved back with vertical slats and a rectangular backrest. The chairs are bought at Bukowskis auction house in Stockholm. They are adjusted to MOMIQ design. The front has been upholstered with a purple/blue suzani fabric. Suzanis are embroidered pieces of cloth made in the region of Central Asia. They are an important part of a girl’s dowry and are also used for decorative purposes in Central Asian households. The suzani used for chair Violet Victoria shows flower motives. Most people believe that the flower motives are symbols of fertility and prosperity. A new fabric Cosma from GP & J Baker with a velvet animal print has been used for the backrest of the chair.

CHAIR KIRA SOLD 💜
Of course we’re always happy when our beauties are sold, but it also gives mixed feelings. Each chair we design is handpicked by us, fabrics are carefully sourced and curated, designed by us. We love colours, fabrics and furniture and different cultures. Chair Kira means “ray of light” in the Indian language. It is a Edwardian nursing chair from the second part of the 19th century. On the seating of the chair a vintage grain sack with pattern is used. These wonderful, often worn treasures of time, were used for storing and hauling grains. Grains sacks were hand made from long linen bolts that were painstakingly handwoven. The stripes and patterns commonly seen on these textiles acted as the signnature of the farmer so that when they brought their grain to the mill their sacks could be distinguished from the grain sacks of everyone else 💜
