Armbeskytter fra middelalderens Oslo! Under utgravninger i Oslo har det dukket opp flere armbeskyttere fra Middelalderen. Et spennende eksemplar er denne (se originalen her: https://arkeologibloggen.niku.no/laerfunn-fra-middelalderens-oslo/.
Originalen er av lær, med et stykke tre som er festa og dekka av et smalt lærstykke som er sydd fast til det første. Festeanordningen mangler, og sytråden er råtnet bort, slik at man kan se alle delene hver for seg.
På min tolkning har jeg valgt å lage et feste med reimer og spenne sydd fast med lintråd, den samme som de to lærbitene er festa samme med. Jeg tror ikke uten videre at originalen hadde noen slik patent, men denne formen fra reimer er kjent andre armbeskyttere i perioden, bla. fra Storbritannia.
Sømmen er gjort med vokset lintråd festa til et svinebust, som man brukte i middelalderen, og ikke nål som er en moderne løsning.
Archer's bracer from medieval Oslo! Excavations have unearthed several archer's bracers from the medieval period in Oslo. One particularly interresting is this one:

The originalen is made from leather, with a semi flattended piece of wood is kept in place of a second piece of leather, stitched to the first one. The means by which it would be secured to the archer's arm is missing, and the thread used for the seam has decomposed.
In my approximation of the bracer, I have chosen a fastening arrangement of split straps and a buckle, stitched to the edge. I have noe reason to believe that the original had anything like it, but the method can be seen on period bracers both in UK and on the European continent.
The stitches are done with a waxed linen thread that is fixed to a pig's bristle, which is the authentic method for sewing leather, and not with a needle, which is a modern day idea.
