Open Studios Waitākere

An art form you don't get to see every day.

Step inside The Binding Studio with Louise James, where traditional bookbinding techniques, beautiful materials and more than 20 years of experience come together.

From bespoke books to presentation boxes and keepsakes, Louise's work is all about the little details, and the skill and patience behind every piece.

Filmmaker Conan Fitzpatrick recently visited Louise to capture a glimpse of her process, the tools she uses and the craftsmanship behind this fascinating art form.

Want to see it for yourself? Louise will be opening her studio for Open Studios Waitākere, with demonstrations, works in progress and handmade books and supplies available to purchase.

📍 731 Scenic Drive, Henderson Valley/Waiatarua

Today there were 5 excellent people in the studio learning "Sewn Books". We learned a simple tape binding and a more complex coptic stitch, with lots of quality paper, colours and patterns.

There are very limited spaces left to join a bookbinding workshop this year. Link below to secure one of the last spots for 2026!

The wee table top guillotine has been in my possession a few years. I never tried him....

Nothing like a workshop to make stuff happen!

Been resurrecting him for the last couple of days so he can come to Te Uru on Sunday to teach with me 😊

There are still spaces available- you could come see him in action while you learn how to make a sewn book!
