Usually, we’re helping our brides see what’s possible with their dresses. This time, one of our own gowns needed that same care 🤍

After spending time in our summer window display, the tulle had become discoloured and so brittle it would tear with the gentlest touch. It was sad to see, but there was still so much beauty in this gown worth saving.

So we removed the damaged tulle and replaced it, bringing back the lovely softness and fullness of her skirt. Seeing her ready to be tried on again makes me so happy!

A little reminder to keep your wedding dress away from direct sunlight, even if it’s in a garment bag or a keepsake box.

And if there’s something about your gown you’re worried can’t be fixed, send us a photo. We’ll talk you through what may be possible 🤍

There’s a little more hardware involved in bridal alterations than you might expect 🤍🔨

This is a glimpse of the preparation behind the steel boning we use to help shape and support a wedding dress. Each piece needs to be cut, filed and finished before it can sit inside its own channel.

Finding a tool that makes that process easier brings a surprising amount of joy to our workroom! And while improving our methods is our responsibility, the extra time spent figuring them out isn’t something I believe should be passed on to our brides.

The hammering, however… that has to wait until your lovely, calm fitting is finished 😂

Fellow seamstresses, what do you use to cut flat steel boning? I’d love to hear what works for you.

Raising the back of a corset-style wedding dress is definitely possible, but it takes careful planning to make sure the finished result still looks like it belongs with the original gown 🤍

For this bride, we used matching fabric from accessories that came with the dress to build up the back neckline, reshape the corset line, and create a cleaner V shape. It’s a good example of how even a detail that feels quite structural can sometimes be changed with the right alteration approach 💁🏻‍♀️

So whether the back feels too low, the bodice sits differently from how you imagined, or there’s an area you wish could be reshaped, there may be more alteration options than you realise.

The best thing you can do is ask before deciding something can’t be changed!

Send us a photo of your dress and tell us what’s bothering you. We’ll let you know what may be possible and talk you through the best alteration options for your gown 🫶🏼

Sometimes the solution is more creative than you think ✨

Can you raise the back of a corset? Absolutely, but it needs to be planned properly so the new shape still looks like it belongs with the original dress.

At this consultation, I’m pinning a mock-up of the new corset line so our bride can see exactly where the back will sit before we commit to the alteration.

This stage is so important because it allows us to check the height, shape, proportion, and how the new corset line flows into the rest of the gown.

It’s not just about adding fabric. The dress needs to be reshaped so the finished result looks intentional, balanced, and beautifully fitted to the bride.

You can tell something doesn’t look quite right, but knowing what needs changing is another story 🤍

Sometimes the detail that catches your eye is only part of the problem. During a fitting, we look at how the whole dress sits on you, because changing the cups alone won’t always give you the fit you’re hoping for.

You don’t need to arrive knowing the solution. That’s what we’re here for 😌

Always take your wedding dress to a bridal alteration specialist!

Can you spot what went wrong with this online wedding dress? 👀

Buying a wedding dress online can sometimes work out beautifully, but there is always an element of risk when you haven’t seen or tried the gown in person first.

In this case, our bride actually loved the dress overall, but one of the straps had been sewn on upside down 😅 Thankfully, it was an easy fix.

Other alterations included taking in the centre-back zip and inner elastic, fixing the hook and eye, and hemming the gown so everything sat beautifully for her.

I’m curious… if you bought your wedding dress online, were you happy when it arrived, or was it completely different from what you expected?

Sometimes fixing an alteration takes far more work than doing it correctly the first time ✨️

For this bride, shortening the straps had lifted the entire bustline too high, which meant the bust curve was no longer sitting where her natural bust actually was.

Correcting it meant completely reshaping the bust curve, carefully removing and repositioning overlapping lace, working around boning, and checking everything again at fitting before the final hand-sewing was completed.

This is why experience, communication, and knowing when to ask for help matter so much in bridal alterations.

Brides trust us to guide them, but as seamstresses, we also need to know when something is outside our comfort zone. Referring a bride or asking another specialist for advice is never a weakness. It is part of giving her the best possible result.

And I’m so grateful for the seamstresses who have trusted us enough to refer brides our way when an alteration needed a different level of experience 🙏🏼

The easiest alteration isn’t always the right alteration 🤍

This bride came to us after her bodice had been shortened through the straps. While that may seem like the simplest way to lift a long bodice, it also lifted the bust points and armhole too high.

For this gown, the better approach would have been to shorten through the waist so the proportions of the bodice stayed where they were meant to sit.

That’s why bridal alterations are never just about fixing one area. Every adjustment can affect another part of the gown.

And this is also why experience matters. Not every seamstress will approach the same alteration in the same way, and not every method will give you the same result.

Follow along for part two, where I’ll show you how we corrected the bodice and brought everything back into proportion ✨

Wedding dress drapery can be beautiful, but it needs a little extra care when steaming.

If your gown has soft cowls, pleating or draped folds, avoid holding the steamer too close or pulling the fabric sideways. Both can affect the way the drape sits and can create unwanted crease lines.

Hold the cowls in the direction it’s designed to fall, keep a little distance between the steamer and the gown, and let the fabric hang and settle afterwards.

I also recommend steaming your dress the night before so it has plenty of time to dry before the wedding day.

Save this for later if your dress has draping, and follow us for more wedding dress tips 🤍

From an online top to a bespoke one-piece gown 🤍

For this bride, we created a custom skirt with soft front cowl detailing, a beautiful train, and carefully considered construction so the finish looked seamless from the front.

During the process, she decided she wanted the look to become one piece rather than two separate pieces, so we attached the skirt to the bodice through the side seams and back.

We also added eyelash lace trim to the neckline and created a custom lace veil using the same trim, which tied the whole look together so beautifully 💞

What started as a simple online top became something completely personal, elegant, and bespoke to her.

Our bride pulled this look off so effortlessly 😍
