Honestly probably better to just jump onto the Wally website to check out the new N**e Lucy drop, but at least we gave it a crack! Much easier to talk menswear than womenswear, but with a couple of dudes running the shop during the week we need to try to get better at showing off both halves of the new arrivals.

Also not shown, some epic knits and a surprise pair of ankle boots Staci managed to slip in there. That girl loves an animal print.

Opening a retail store is quite challenging - you have to trust your instinct and back yourself even when you have no firm evidence that what you’re doing is going to work or how it’s going to play out. Part of this is selecting and committing to a location (and a fairly hefty lease commitment), part of it is trusting your brand will resonate, and part of it is taking wild swings when buying product that you hope people will buy.

Some of our brands, we buy quite far in advance - and Polar here is an example. When we placed our orders for this stock in July last year, we had our location locked in, but outside of that we really didn’t know who our customer was or whether they’d like some freaky lime green top or just some plain white tees. We took some big swings, and they haven’t all come off.

At Wally we really do want our product mix to be different, where you can find something in colours and shapes that you can’t readily get at other retail stores. It means we probably miss the mark a bit more, we end up with a bit much stock, and we have a fairly hefty sale offering, but all in all I think some of these choices give Wally a bit of character and love.

If you’re looking for something a little different - make sure to give us a shot at Wally - in-store in Takapuna, or online.

And in closing, I’m actually really into the lime green football jersey - it fits mint. New Polar instore and online now.
