Earth Sea Sky

Earth Sea Sky Our New Zealand made performance outdoor clothing is worn throughout the world by adrenaline junkies, multi-sporters, adventure travellers and urban prisoners.

We use the world’s best fabrics, and our own innovative designs and work alongside five clothing manufacturers to make all our garments here in New Zealand. Our production runs are small and sustainable, we export over 40% of our production and we take great pride in our reputation for quality and durability. Earth Sea Sky is made in New Zealand exporting products not jobs.

James Everett kindly shared this photo. Several years ago he purchased a French blue Echo jacket from our Wellington pop-up for his photography trip in South America. He is wearing the jacket in this photo, taken at Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia.

We thought the perfect photo to share for Matariki.

We hope to be able to view the Matariki cluster and will be taking the chance to get outside and connect with whānau.

Our store is closed tomorrow for the Matariki public holiday.

Pat and Josie’s smiles and enthusiasm were welcome additions at our Wellington Pop-Up. They trained down from Palmerston North to attend Scrutiny week at parliament, visiting us decked out in their Hydrophobias. We were lucky to have them pop in for two visits and they generously added several items to their Earth Sea Sky collections.

Pictured here in their Hydrophobias and Ninjas with a nimbus/steel Merino Beanie and pacific blue Whipper also visible – good protection from the southerly blast that had hit the Capital. Thank-you for your support and for the interesting conversations.

When we visited Wellington last year our Riff Raff retro comeback was gaining momentum. Rissa stopped in after her Sunday morning dragon boat training to show us her poppy Riff Raff - an op shop find. She was anticipating the 2025 run and keen to order one.

Fast forward to 2026 and Rissa again popped in after training, this time wearing her new Saddleback Riff Raff . She said though she loves it, she still finds herself reaching for the original.

Rissa hopes her new addition will build memories, and she'll be able to pass it, with the stories, onto her children.

Thanks Rissa, great to chat.

When $200 Becomes Priceless
When Michelle moved from Tasmania to Brisbane in November 2002, she packed for the heat. Warm clothes? They all went into the shipping container.

A week later, she discovered two things: Brisbane nights can be surprisingly cool, and over-air-conditioned office buildings are even colder when you're working night shift.

After shivering through her first few shifts, Michelle wandered into a local camping store looking for a fleece. She found a cherry-red Earth Sea Sky polar fleece with a high collar and a price tag of nearly $200.

"At the time, I wondered whether I was slightly crazy for spending that much on a jacket," she recalls.

More than twenty years later, that jacket is still one of her favourites.

It kept her warm through countless night shifts in Brisbane and later accompanied her to Antarctica. The only real signs of wear are faint patches on the elbows from years of leaning over hand-drawn weather charts.

"When I distribute the cost of the jacket over the number of times I've worn it, that jacket would be cheap at double the price."

In 2014, Michelle returned to Antarctica, travelling via New Zealand's Scott Base on her way to Casey Station. While there, she spotted an Earth Sea Sky Gretel Merino jacket embroidered with the Scott Base logo. She bought it and quickly found herself living in it.

That lasted until her first shift at Casey Station, when a slip on icy concrete ended with a hole in the elbow of her brand-new jacket. "A small patch sorted it out," she says.

Twelve years later, the jacket remains her go-to for cold morning walks. The merino shows more wear than her original fleece, particularly at the elbows and seams, but it continues to deliver the warmth and breathability she loves. "Again, if I consider the cost per wear of that jacket, it was exceptional value."

A significant part of our work is sourcing fabrics that perform and are of the best quality. These are costly but, in the long term, deliver the best value and reliability. It is stories like this one that affirm what we do.

Thank you, Michelle, for more than twenty years of loyalty and for sharing your story with us. We're proud to have been part of the journey.

Wellington, thank you.

It was great to catch up with the many of you who called into the pop up, to add to wardrobes, share stories and drop off well-loved garments needing repair. Your valuing of our commitment to NZ made was very appreciated.

Special thank-you to Bivouac Outdoor for the loan of their stands and tables and for welcoming us as neighbours for two weeks, and to Nicky and who helped us pack up on Sunday night all for a couple of slices of pizza.

Thank-you for the outpouring of support after our break in last week. We have been overwhelmed with the messages and kindness, a reminder of the wonderful community we are proud to be part of.

While the incident was far from ideal, we are grateful no one was hurt. And, as a 95-year-old friend used to say ‘We have so much to be thankful for.’

Thank-you to all of you who messaged us, emailed and liked our post. Your concern and heartfelt support was very appreciated. Thank-you for the many eyes watching for any unusual Earth Sea Sky sales.

Thank-you also to our security company Trident, who were quick to react and the New Zealand Police quick to respond, as were Ben and Nat when woken by the police at 4.30am.

Our wonderful neighbours Little Merchants popped over with coffees for the crew while they cleaned up. Jeff from Offcut and Ness from YDU (Defence Force) kindly bought in morning teas and the team at YUM Granola sent us an welcome package of breakfast treats.

PS..to those concerned about Ping the Penguin - you’ll see he’s alive and well photographic evidence top right. He thanks you for your concern.

Wellington last week was wild. A southerly weather bomb dropped making it literally the coolest little capital. It knocked our penguin off its feet but did treat us to a parade of rain jacket clad Wellingtonians walking down Willis street - much to our delight, many in Earth Sea Sky rain jackets. Hydrophobias and Zeals were the most frequent, this one in yellow and black, perfect for the finals weekend that was!

A big thank you to Anita who advertises our Wellington pop-ups on her community notice board every year.

Anita is a loyal visitor when we are in Wellington. When we first met her she was on a mission to find clothing that kept her warm. We are confident this is working as she is always wearing a collection of Earth Sea Sky layers. Pictured here this year in her marlin Merino Beanie, orchid Ninja, fuchsia Roadie and Trekker Socks happy to be purchasing this year’s additions marine Micropants and fleece gloves. Anita loves colour which we think matches her positive energy.

Thank you Anita, your visits always make us smile.

Pic: A couple of hot heads....

The Hot Head was introduced into our range 32 years ago and its design remains unchanged - simple, effective and highly functional. David originally designed it for:

- Maximum warmth - constructed from USA-made 300 Polartec® fleece, it’s virtually windproof, especially with the added 200-weight Polartec® band around the bottom.

- A quick-drying, low-profile hat that fits easily under any waterproof hood.

- To insulate the back of the neck - a key area of heat loss due to an artery running close to the surface. As the saying goes, “If your feet are cold, put on a hat.”

- A snug, comfortable fit that stays on in the wind - making it a favourite for helicopter teams, ocean crews, and anyone in cold conditions.

When the weather finally gets cold, you'll want one of these in your collection.
