To honour the creativity and intention behind this piece, the desinger, Melchie Canoy Chie Canz shares the story and symbolism of the gown in her words.
“Introducing the Oamaru Victorian Costume, a sustainable fashion gown creation inspired by the timeless elegance of Oamaru’s Victorian heritage. This design is handcrafted using recycled old bed sheets, blankets, and repurposed lace details on the
shoulders and sleeves, transforming discarded materials into wearable art. The costume features a
multiple-layered skirt, a corset-inspired covered bodice, and a beautifully structured bustled back that reflects the sophistication of classic Victorian fashion. Completing the ensemble are a Victorian-inspired hat and elegant umbrella also made from the fabric scraps adding charm, grace, and authenticity to the overall look. Through this creation, the design celebrates creativity, sustainability, and the beauty of giving old materials a new life while honoring the rich Victorian culture of Oamaru.”
