A beautiful collection all from the same Kawakawa Pounamu. When this stone is held to the light it has a flowering of chatoyant white shimmering in some parts. In the cross this chatoyancy looks like a phosphorescent Pounamu wave reaching the forested Coast shoreline. Congratulations Susan Wallace for being ordained as the first wahine Maori to serve as bishop for Te Hui Amorangi ki Te Waipounamu(The Maori Anglican Church).
In the Roimata (the tear drop )the chatoyancy travels down like river streams coming down a mountain valley. To me the indent on both sides is like a pool or a source or even a portal into strength and healing that comes from our inevitable travels through grief. The earrings are from this special Kawakawa Pounamu too and are all available on the website -

Kārearea the Falcon endemic to Aotearoa. Nikita Stevenson has perfectly captured the fierce agility of Kārearea in this Pounamu carving. Kārearea can fly 200 km an hour when chasing its prey. It nests in the forest around home in scrapes high in the epiphytes or in the old logs of the Kahikatea and Totara. Sometimes we marvel at this speedster hunting from the Taramakau terrace trees hurtling across the river. 5000- 8000 birds are alive so very precious -anybody ever been dive bombed or swooped at by a Kārearea protecting its young ? I love hearing their unique kek kek kek call and chitter exchange. I read today to hear a Kārearea call on a fine day is a forecast for rain the next and to hear a Kārearea call on a wet day is a forecast for fine weather the following day - looks like beautiful rainforest rain again tomorrow then 💚

Just back from Ōkārito where I photographed this Koru. The colours of this Pounamu seem so much like the magical lagoon sanctuary Ōkārito
They both are a mandala -a spiral whirl of Mountain, Forest with the rata vine flowering. Harakeke edged Lagoon, their shiny black seeds drifting on the shifting currents and settling into the earth. The river birds, Kōtuku, S**g, Oyster Catcher fishing in the between tides stillness. Ocean meets Sky in orange and red splashed sunrises and sets and between all this and so much more an orchestra of Tui, Korimako and even Kea to the background sound of the waves landing on the blacksand shore. The Repo in late April teeming with bird life like Fernbird and Ngirungiru the Tomtit. Autumn in Ōkārito is what this Pounamu seems to me to be like ! Beautiful carving Nikita Stevenson to compliment.🍃🧡🍂

Late Summer and the little Piwakawaka are darting around scoffing sandflies and making us smile. This little treasure landed here just long enough to fly off with its human companion.
Beautiful carving from Nikita Stevenson. We been having a wonderful Summer and thank you for the word of mouth recommendations which have bought so many people to Shades of Jade to find their special pounamu this Summer, you’re as super as this wee carving.

Wishing you a very special Christmas with time to relax and be with those you love. Some time in the sun (even if it’s the inside kind ) and some Summer swims (even if that’s a walk in the rain)too. Hope your holiday time is as kind and expansive as this beautiful Pounamu Tohorā -Whale carved by Nikita.

This beautiful Pounamu never ceases to amaze me-how its colours shift and flow throughout the stone. This part seems like the Summer forest full of flowering Kāmahi with Harakeke and Mānuka in their first blooms here on the West Coast too -a gentle breeze cooling busy bees and no wonder the birds sound so loud feeding on such a feast of nectar. I came in from the creek with a dragonfly -the first I’ve seen this Sumner attached to my arm and smiling listening to the neighbours children further up the creek having great fun doing a crawlie (kōura-fresh water crayfish 🦞) count. I like the simplicity of this carving Warren’s made and how it reminds me to enjoy the simple things like the late afternoon early Summer sun and to breathe in all those very good things that surround us every day. Hoping you too are enjoying these December days and enjoying the everyday and extraordinary that we experience in them when we can slow down and simply be.

eauty on both sides of this Pounamu Disc Warren’s just finished -the colours look like the forest of the Taramakau River terrace -the Kāmahi turning a mass of white -a bees heaven, the yellow orange cones of the future giant Kahikatea and the greens to pink orange of the Kiokio fern cloaking the creek edge. This side I see the Taramakau Terns coming together in their nightly rookery on the river bed. Warrens brother said a trio of Husky was the first thing he could see! I love that this pounamu conjures different imagery for us all.
