So this is what a 70" (inch!). Full size female Piupiu looks like whilst drying... the rather smaller 36" but also full size Male piupiu for comparison...
So that's over 1.7 meters...
Not often do we have to make them this big, but for this particular order, they are predominantly from 50" to 70" ... it takes a lot of resources (well over 400 pokinikini) and time.
That is also the reason why we are currently not taking any "female only" orders. We want to use ALL leaves when we harvest, so a mix of male (short) & Female (long) & ideally perhaps Primary school age medium drops are ideal. That way, nothing gets wasted, and we can help more kura or groups to get their piupiu made. However, despite all that, we turn more orders down than what we accept as there are only so many hours in the day, hands to do it and ultimately harakeke to use...
I really wish more weavers would make these, so all that want them (kura in particular) could get them. It always breaks my heart to tell someone that after all the fundraising, they and the kids did that we can't take their orders...
So, if you are a weaver... think about it....start by planting your own paa harakeke with good piupiu cultivars. While they grow and mature, practice, practice, and practice more to get better quality and speed. So when "your" plants are ready, so will you be. Call it a long-term plan. It can be a very secure source of income because there is so much demand...
This is also very rewarding, mahi. When we get emails or photos from kura with their piupiu at a competition or performance, it is very heartwarming to see. The smiles on kids' faces...
And, it's a team effort. There are 3 of us full time and 2 more part-timers working on these. Teamwork is important to not get overwhelmed!
