Breast Milk: Nature's Superfood for Little Miracles 🥰

"There is no such thing as “extended” breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding a toddler is as normal, healthy, and beneficial as breastfeeding a baby. The benefits of breastmilk do not expire at one year - in fact, ounce per ounce they increase!

Throughout human history the natural age of weaning has likely been between 2-7. This has been demonstrated by a variety of methods including oral histories, anthropological data, and comparison to our closest mammalian relatives, the primate family.

Toddlers still benefit from that close relationship, as well as the fats, protein, vitamins, antibodies, stem cells, and beneficial hormones (and thousands of other known and unknown components) that breastmilk provides - all in the perfect amounts and perfectly digestible.

Breastmilk is also rich in human milk oligosaccharides which become food for the beneficial bacteria which live in our gut - thus nurturing a healthy microbiome. A flourishing and diverse microbiome is believed to be one of the primary factors which promotes health and prevents disease throughout our lifetimes.

The WHO and UNICEF recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, and continued breastfeeding until at least two years of age (with the addition of complementary solid foods added in at six months.)

They state, “Over 820,000 children's lives could be saved every year among children under 5 years, if all children 0–23 months were optimally breastfed. Breastfeeding improves IQ, school attendance, and is associated with higher income in adult life.”

Although breastfeeding toddlers (also called “full-term” nursing) is not the cultural norm in many Western countries, it continues to be the biological norm for our species."

This is a FACT: Babies are never allergic to their own mother’s milk! 🌿💙

A baby cannot be allergic to their mother’s milk because breast milk is a natural, species-specific food uniquely made for human babies. Plus, your breast milk is genetically matched to your baby, making it truly unique. Breast milk is designed to be easily digestible and safe for your baby, so it doesn’t contain any foreign substances that would trigger an allergy to the milk itself.

However, small amounts of proteins from foods the mother eats can pass into her milk and cause a reaction in some babies. This reaction isn’t to the breast milk itself but to specific food proteins that slip through.

✨ Here are the most common culprits:

Dairy 🥛 – Dairy is the most common trigger for sensitivity. Cow’s milk proteins can sometimes make babies fussy, gassy, or give them tummy troubles. Some babies may even get a rash or dry skin when they’re sensitive to dairy.

Soy 🌱 – Like dairy, soy proteins can also upset some babies, especially if they’re already sensitive to dairy. Signs include gas, fussiness, or mild skin reactions.

Eggs 🍳 – Eggs are another food that can sometimes cause gassiness or irritability. If you notice your baby is more comfortable when you skip eggs, it may be a sign of a mild sensitivity.

Nuts 🌰 – While true nut allergies are rare in young babies, some can still have mild reactions, like digestive discomfort, from nuts.

Wheat and Gluten 🌾 – This is less common, but some babies may react to gluten with digestive issues or mild skin irritation.

If you suspect your baby has a sensitivity, there’s no need to panic or stop breastfeeding! Instead, it’s best to work with a lactation consultant who can help guide you. Often, even a small diet adjustment can reveal which foods may be triggering discomfort for your baby. In most cases, these sensitivities don’t last forever and can improve as their digestive systems mature. 🌸

💧 BREASTFEEDING MYTH 💧
"You baby can get all the milk he or she needs in the first 5 to 10 minutes of nursing"

The amount of time a baby needs to spend at the breast can vary greatly, and moms should never determine the amount of milk their baby is receiving by watching the clock.

Depending on the baby's age, efficiency at the breast, the mom's let down speed and her overall milk supply, nursing could take as little as 5 minutes to complete.

As your baby gets older, the feedings typically get shorter and shorter, while the baby is actually taking in more milk. This is because the baby is more effective at nursing and can get the milk out faster with fewer breaks ❤️

Producing breastmilk takes up about 30% of the body’s energy. Your brain, for comparison, only uses about 20%.
You’re not doing nothing.
This is why you’re so tired at the end of the day.
This is why you’re so hungry and so thirsty.
So, if all you did was feed your baby today, don’t let your mind convince you that you didn’t do enough. You did enough. You did amazing. 🤱
