…. Amboise, a small town on the Loire with a royal château sitting high on the cliff above the river.
Francis I (the guy who commissioned the massive Château Chambord) grew up here.

In 1516 he invited Leonardo da Vinci to France as his first painter, engineer and architect.

Leonardo spent the last three years of his life just down the hill at Clos Lucé — close enough that there was said to be a tunnel so the king could visit. He brought the Mona Lisa and two other paintings with him, and died there on 2 May 1519, aged 67.

He was first buried in a chapel in the château grounds. That church was later pulled down. In the 1800s some bones — including a notably large skull — were recovered and placed in the little Chapel of Saint-Hubert, which is where the tomb is today. Whether they are actually Leonardo’s is still argued over.
