Towards the end of 2023, Hamish Thompson approached me to create a booklet about small businesses behind the counter.

Back in 1977, Hamish created a photographic series of Christchurch shopkeepers using a 35mm Nikkormat FT3 in black and white film.

Now based in Wellington, Hamish has replicated the same process and camera with his Wellington shopkeepers series.

‘Behind the Counter: Wellington Shopkeepers’ features 30 shopkeepers from around the Wellington region. The exhibition is currently on at Thistle Hall, Cuba St, Wellington until Sunday 28 April.
