Yes your eyes do not deceive you, this is a camo wedding dress!

If you’re wondering how I got here then let me tell you: it was the internet and the annoying itch to prove the haters wrong.

Look, I’m not the biggest fan of camo to begin with. But one night while doom scrolling I came across a reel on Camo wedding dresses and it felt like an attack on my eyeballs. But it tickled me so much that it sent me into the biggest giggle fit I’ve had in a really long time. The concept to me felt ridiculous and too stupid that my twisted brain then went ‘what if though?’. (See, DANGEROUS!). The gawdy nature of these dresses, popular in the Appalachian mountains, felt so camp and I took that as a challenge to design and make a camo gown that was actually tasteful. I also saw this before April Fools Day and had a whole concept for it planned out, backstory and all, but ultimately that fell through. So, mission accomplished? I bloody well think so!

Making these kinds of dresses is already pretty metal to begin with. But making this monstrosity took 25 METRES OF FABRIC! Let alone the rigilene boning on all the spiral shapes which ended up being approx 70 metres 😅

If you’ve ever worked with me on a bridal or wedding commission, then you know what my philosophy is when it comes to your special outfit: where whatever tf you want honey! Seriously, we put way too much pressure on ourselves to make our wedding outfits fit the norm or to please others expectations that it’s so easy to lose sight of what a wedding is about: which is celebrating the unification of two people who love each other for who they are 🥹

While personally, I won’t be showing up in this when the time comes for me to get married. But, I’m sure we all know someone that given the opportunity, would absolutely rock this at the altar!

This beast was entered in the Avant Garde section at the amongst many other entries.

And don’t worry, when the time comes, my bridal gown will be the sparkliest thing ever 😘

It's okay if your jaw is on the floor... it's pretty fkn bright, isn't it?

This piece, Land of the Long Line of Construction Work, is my love letter to this beautiful little country I've called home my entire life. Once I'd decided I was moving to Australia, I knew I wanted my last projects here to say thank you to Aotearoa. One day, while hand-stitching (where my brain tends to wander), I found myself wondering how I could do that without making something overly sentimental.

Then I remembered that we have a government that has a road cone hotline. I think that the whole thing is ridiculous, but it got me thinking. We seem to love complaining about road cones and construction, but for a young country still finding its feet, isn't building infrastructure exactly what we should be doing? The humble road cone might be a nuisance to some, but to me it's become a symbol of progress. It marks the places where today's inconvenience becomes tomorrow's investment. From there, the idea snowballed. I started thinking about our tūpuna naming this land Aotearoa, ‘the Land of the Long White Cloud’, and what they might think if they saw the country today. Would they be proud? Frustrated? Hopeful? Probably all of the above.

I loved the idea of the challenge of turning something so synonymous with blue-collar work into couture. The gown borrows the silhouette of a road cone, while the dramatic cope references the long white cloud. I also looked to designers like Pierpaolo Piccioli, whose fearless use of bold blocks of colour convinced me to fully embrace the absurdity of fluorescent orange.

Also, shout out to the Sallies in Palmy for unknowingly stocking a fabric that would change the trajectory of this entry. About halfway through I hit a crisis point and finding the darker orange fabric for the cape sitting on a roll felt like divine intervention.

I've realised that a lot of my favourite ideas start with one question: "Wouldn't it be funny if...". Sometimes that's dangerous, but it's also where the best ideas live. I don't want to take fashion so seriously that I forget to play. I want to make garments that make people laugh first and think second.

I'm still blown away that this ridiculous little idea went on to win 1st Place in the Gala Section, beating out 24 other entries. The standard was insanely high, and I'm incredibly grateful to Hokonui Fashion Design Awards for creating a space where designers can take risks like this.

So if you've got a weird idea rattling around in your head… Take the punt, you never know where it'll take you. 🧡🚧

Receiving lovely messages directly from clients is one thing but being nominated and listed as a finalist for a NZ wedding industry awards is something else 🥹

To whoever voted for me - thank you so so much 🫶 actually wild to be recognised as one of the best in NZ atm

In the moments where I seriously doubt myself, I’m gonna remember this and think ‘listen you silly 🐩, you got nominated as one of the best bridal alterations dressmakers in the whole damn country - you’ve absolutely got this!’

Love my little lovebirds so much and it’s always a joy bibbidi-bobbidi-booping your outfits for your big day xx

TLDR: an op-ed taking some time to reflect on that fact that my little baby is 10, but also acknowledging in writing that I’m ditching it in a couple of months time 🥺

Final call for alterations and commissions before I ditch to jump the ditch:
- Commissions must be locked in by the end of July
- Alterations booked by the end of August

Super proud of what this engine could and did, and super grateful for the supporters who helped chug it along. But it’s time to pop it into storage for a couple of years while I venture beyond to become the GOAT of tailoring and dressmaking. It’s been real, catch you on the flip side ✌️
