🌎 Eco tourism ✈️
"A form of tourism that consists of visiting relatively undisturbed or undisturbed natural areas, with the aim of studying and admiring the landscape and the wild plants and animals it harbours, as well as any cultural manifestations (past and present) observable in these areas", Hector Ceballos-Lascurain. This Mexican architect was one of the first to propose a definition of the concept of "eco-tourism" in the 1980s, at a time when a very important movement of environmental awareness was developing. Even today, this period remains a pivotal moment in the history of sustainable development.
But do you know exactly what eco-tourism is? Because while everyone has in mind key points of what this concept could be, the exact definition of this type of tourism is actually quite precise. ☀️
🌳 Eco-tourism is a form of tourism that appeared some forty years ago, at a time when environmental protection was at the heart of all debates. However, its definition is much more recent. Eco-tourism is a tourism approach committed to sustainable development aimed at preserving the biodiversity and cultural resources of a natural area. 🌴 ⚠️ Eco-tourism is often mistakenly confused with "sustainable tourism" or "responsible tourism". Even if the 3 notions are based on the fundamentals of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental dimensions), eco-tourism unlike the other 2 refers essentially to natural spaces.
Similarly, where "nature tourism" consists of the discovery of the fauna and flora of a natural area, eco-tourism requires a real commitment to sustainable development, moreover the queen notion of the concept.
🌱 Fundamental principles of eco-tourism 🌱
-Minimise the physical, social, behavioural and psychological impacts of tourism on the environment 💚
-participate in raising awareness of the cultural and environmental issues of the site visited ✅
-generate economic benefits for local populations 💸
-recognise the rights and spiritual beliefs of local communities and work with them to promote their "empowerment" 💪
-involve the visitor and raise awareness of the social and environmental issues of the countries visited ♻️
-Design facilities with a low socio-environmental impact 🟢
🏕 Examples of eco-tourism trips 🏝
Costa Rica or the Galapagos are among the main eco-tourism destinations. But in reality, eco-tourism is not reserved to a specific part of the planet and can be practiced anywhere. For example: hiking in a park with a local guide is eco-tourism, as it generates significant income for the host communities while preserving the environment. 🏔 🏜
So to give a simple definition of eco-tourism: 'responsible travel to natural sites while preserving the environment and the well-being of local people'. 🌱💚🐼
