PBA Franchise Files: 1975 Toyota Comets
"Ang Unang Hari ng Inaugural Season ng PBA"

Noong 1975, isinilang ang Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), ang kauna-unahang professional basketball league sa Asya. Isa sa mga koponang agad nagmarka ng kasaysayan ay ang Toyota Comets, na naghatid ng pambihirang kampanya sa kanilang unang taon bilang franchise.

Sa ilalim ng pamumuno ni coach Dante Silverio, ipinakita ng Toyota ang kanilang lakas sa buong inaugural season. Tinapos nila ang First Conference na may 22 panalo at 4 na talo at nasungkit ang kampeonato matapos talunin ang kanilang pinakamahigpit na karibal, ang Crispa Redmanizers. Hindi rito nagtapos ang kanilang dominasyon dahil muli nilang nasakop ang Second Conference, kung saan nagtala sila ng 16 panalo at 7 talo bago muling manaig laban sa Crispa sa Finals.

Isa sa mga pinakamalalaking sandali ng Toyota noong 1975 ay ang pagbubukas ng unang araw ng PBA noong Abril 9 sa Araneta Coliseum. Sa harap ng humigit-kumulang 18,000 manonood, tinalo nila ang U/Tex Weavers sa iskor na 105–101. Ang tagumpay na ito ang nagsilbing simula ng isang makasaysayang kampanya para sa koponan.

Sa gitna ng season, nagtala rin ang Toyota ng mahaba at kahanga-hangang winning streak. Noong Mayo 4, matapos talunin ang Concepcion Carrier, umabot sa 24 sunod na panalo ang kanilang winning run kung isasama ang kanilang mga laro noong amateur days. Nagpatuloy rin ang kanilang mahusay na paglalaro hanggang sa maging unang koponang nakapasok sa Finals ng inaugural PBA season.

Pinangunahan ang Toyota ng ilan sa mga pinakadakilang manlalaro sa kasaysayan ng Philippine basketball. Kabilang sa kanilang roster sina Robert Jaworski, Ramon Fernandez, Francis Arnaiz, Orlando Bauzon, Oscar Rocha, Rodolfo "Ompong" Segura, at iba pang mahuhusay na manlalaro. Nagkaroon din sila ng import na sina Stan "Sweet" Cherry at Byron "Snake" Jones, na tumulong sa kanilang matagumpay na kampanya sa unang dalawang kumperensya.

Gayunpaman, nabigo ang Toyota na makamit ang inaasam na grand slam. Sa All-Philippine Championship, muling nagharap ang Toyota at Crispa sa kanilang ikatlong sunod na Finals. Sa dikitang serye na umabot sa limang laro, nanaig ang Crispa, 3–2, at napigilan ang Toyota na makuha ang lahat ng tatlong kampeonato sa inaugural season ng liga.

Sa kabuuan, nagtapos ang Toyota Comets bilang pinakamahusay na koponan ng 1975 PBA season, taglay ang kabuuang rekord na 42 panalo at 15 talo. "A Legacy of Excellence in Basketball"

Allan Houston is a former American professional basketball player best known for his successful career with the New York Knicks. Recognized for his smooth shooting style, strong leadership, and ability to perform in important moments, Houston became one of the most respected shooting guards of his generation. His achievements include two NBA All-Star selections, an Olympic gold medal and a lasting legacy with the Knicks.

Born on April 20, 1971, in Louisville, Kentucky, Allan Wade Houston Jr. developed his basketball skills at Ballard High School. He helped lead his school to a Kentucky state championship and earned recognition as one of the country’s top high school players. After graduating, he attended the University of Tennessee, where he played under his father, Wade Houston, who was also his coach.

During his college career, Houston became one of Tennessee’s greatest basketball players. He graduated in 1993 as the school’s all-time leading scorer and earned several honors, including multiple First-Team All-SEC selections. In recognition of his contributions, the University of Tennessee retired his jersey number, 20, in 2011.

Houston entered the NBA in 1993 when the Detroit Pistons selected him with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the NBA Draft. He improved steadily during his three seasons with the Pistons, increasing his scoring average each year. By the 1995–96 season, he had become one of the team’s leading scorers.

In 1996, Houston signed with the New York Knicks, the team with which he would become most closely associated. He quickly established himself as a dependable scorer and an excellent three-point shooter. His ability to make difficult shots and remain calm under pressure made him an important part of the Knicks’ success.

One of the most memorable moments of Houston’s career occurred during the 1999 NBA Playoffs. In Game 5 of the first-round series against the Miami Heat, the Knicks were trailing by one point in the final seconds. Houston received the ball and made a running jump shot with less than one second remaining, giving New York a 78–77 victory. The shot helped the eighth-seeded Knicks defeat the top-seeded Heat and became one of the most famous plays in franchise history.

The Knicks continued their remarkable playoff run and reached the 1999 NBA Finals. Houston played a major role throughout the postseason and averaged 21.6 points per game in the Finals. Although the Knicks lost the championship series to the San Antonio Spurs, their journey remains one of the most memorable playoff runs in NBA history.

Houston reached the peak of his career during the early 2000s. He was selected to the NBA All-Star Game in 2000 and 2001 and became one of the league’s most accurate and dependable shooters. Over his 12-year NBA career, he scored 14,551 points and averaged 17.3 points per game. He also finished his career with a strong 40.2% three-point shooting percentage and an 86.3% free-throw shooting percentage.

In addition to his NBA accomplishments, Houston represented the United States in international basketball. He was a member of the U.S. men’s basketball team that won the gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. This achievement added another important honor to his basketball career.

Unfortunately, knee injuries affected the later years of Houston’s career. He missed many games and was eventually forced to retire from professional basketball in 2005. Despite the challenges caused by injuries, his accomplishments and impact on the game remained significant.

After retiring as a player, Houston continued working in basketball. He joined the New York Knicks’ front office and served in several leadership and management roles. His transition from player to executive allowed him to continue contributing to the organization and to support the development of future basketball players.

Allan Houston’s career is remembered for his exceptional shooting ability, professionalism, and memorable performances. He was not only a talented scorer but also a player who remained composed during high-pressure situations. His famous 1999 playoff shot, his contributions to the New York Knicks, and his Olympic gold medal have secured his place in basketball history.

NBA Franchise Files: 2002-03 Washington Wizards
"Michael Jordan’s Final Dance"

The 2002–03 Washington Wizards season remains one of the most emotional and memorable chapters in NBA history. Although the team failed to reach the playoffs, the season marked the third and final retirement of Michael Jordan, a basketball icon who once again brought life and attention to the franchise and the league during his farewell tour. It was the Wizards’ 42nd season in the NBA and their 30th season in Washington, D.C.

"Major offseason changes"

After Jordan’s return to the NBA in 2001–02, the Wizards attempted to build a more competitive roster around him. They acquired All-Star guard Jerry Stackhouse from the Detroit Pistons and signed veteran contributors Larry Hughes, Bryon Russell, and Charles Oakley. Another notable addition was Patrick Ewing, who joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach following his retirement as a player.

In the NBA Draft, Washington selected Jared Jeffries and hometown favorite Juan Dixon from the University of Maryland, giving the team a fresh injection of talent and energy.

"A promising start that faded away"

The Wizards opened the season with optimism, posting a 6–4 record in their first ten games. However, the momentum quickly disappeared as they suffered a six-game losing streak. The team later responded with five consecutive wins between December and January and entered the All-Star break at 24–25, keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Unfortunately, they stumbled down the stretch, losing 8 of their final 11 games. Washington finished the season with a 37–45 record, identical to the previous year, and missed the playoffs for the sixth straight season.

"Michael Jordan’s final season"

At 40 years old, Michael Jordan still showed that he could compete with a younger generation of stars. He played in all 82 games and averaged:

20.0 points
6.1 rebounds
3.8 assists
1.5 steals per game

While he was no longer the explosive athlete of his Chicago Bulls prime, Jordan remained the center of attention throughout the NBA. Every arena the Wizards visited was filled with fans eager to witness one last chance to see him play.

"Jerry Stackhouse leads the offense"

Although Jordan was the face of the franchise, Jerry Stackhouse served as the team’s leading scorer. He averaged 21.5 points and 4.5 assists per game and became Washington’s primary offensive weapon. Larry Hughes also made a strong impact with 12.8 points and 1.3 steals per game.

Tyronn Lue – 8.6 points, 3.5 assists
Christian Laettner – 8.3 points, 6.6 rebounds
Kwame Brown – 7.4 points, 5.3 rebounds
Brendan Haywood – 6.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks

"Jordan’s final All-Star appearance"

One of the most memorable moments of the season came during the 2003 NBA All-Star Game in Atlanta. Jordan earned his 14th and final All-Star selection and scored 20 points. Although the Eastern Conference lost to the Western Conference in double overtime, the night became an emotional tribute to Jordan and symbolized the passing of the torch to the NBA’s next generation of stars.

"The final game: April 16, 2003"

On April 16, 2003, Michael Jordan played the final game of his NBA career against the Philadelphia 76ers at the First Union Center. The Wizards lost the game, but the result mattered little. As Jordan exited the court, the entire arena rose for a lengthy standing ovation, honoring a player who had forever changed the game of basketball.

"Strong fan support"

Despite missing the playoffs, the Wizards enjoyed tremendous fan support. The MCI Center drew 827,093 spectators, the second-highest attendance total in the NBA that season. Much of that excitement was driven by Jordan’s farewell campaign.

"After the season"

Significant changes followed the season:

Bryon Russell signed with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Tyronn Lue joined the Orlando Magic.
Charles Oakley became a free agent.
Most notably, head coach Doug Collins was dismissed after two seasons in Washington.

On paper, a 37–45 record appears ordinary. In NBA history, however, the 2002–03 Washington Wizards hold a special place. The season represented the final chapter of Michael Jordan’s legendary career, the closing act of one of the greatest players of all time. While the Wizards did not win a championship, they delivered a season filled with nostalgia, emotion, and appreciation for a player who once ruled the basketball world.

Hindi malilimutan ng mga fans ang gabing nag-walkout ang Talk ‘N Text sa Game 4 bilang protesta sa isang flagrant foul call pa lamang sa unang yugto ng laro.
