A few days ago we interviewed a few applicants for our Travel and tours business:Jo-An Voyage Travel and Tours - San Pablo Main Jo-An Voyage Travel and Tours - Calabarzon
Though it was not actually my first time interviewing applicants, nakapaginterview na tayo nung hiring sa clinic, ito yung first time ko makapaginterview na mayroong manager na kasama.
Naalala ko nung naginterview ako for a dream position ko sa isa sa pinakasikat na Aesthetic clinic satin sa Pinas (clue: sounds kuke Ye-lo)
As I was preparing to interview the applicants, nakapag reminisce ako ng onte. Here are a few tips sa mga Gen Zs who are about to join the workforce.

1. Arrive earlier than others.
One of my closest friends and colleague who is a son of a former General shared with me that it was “better to be an hour early than a minute late.”
Bakit advantageous na maaga ka sa interview? Kasi sa start mataas pa ang level ng energy ng interviewer. Tao lang din kami, medyo nakakapagod din kasi magtanong ng paulit-ulit. Kaya mas maaga kayo makadating, mas maganda.
2. Prepare all the necessary documents.
Failure to prepare is preparation to fail.
During the interview merong dumating samin na wa man lang resume na dala. So dun pa lang alam mo na agad na negative na agad. Mabait lang talaga ang manager namin na office pa namin ang nagprint!
Sobrang disappointed ako dun sa applicant na tinuruan na namin ni manager kung ano ba dapat ang ginagawa sa interview. Pang limang interview na daw nya kami, nakakaawa naman kaya nagkaron pa sya ng free lessons from us, hopefully iapply nya sa susunod na interviews nya.
3. Study the position to you are applying for
For our travel and tours business, one of the best applicants was a BS-Biology graduate! 🤯
Imagine ha? Napakalayo ng field of expertise nga pero isa sya sa pinakamagaling sumagot. Inamin nya na iba ang field of training nya pero sinabi nya na willing to learn sya. Inalam nya kung ano ang needs ng company and explained kung papaano nya maiincorporate ang skillset nya from another field para maging beneficial sa company.
4. Look the part.
During the application process, tinitingnan namin ang pictures nyo. Tapos babasahin ang credentials. In our industry (service) you can have the most pleasing personality but if your are easy on the eyes (meaning hindi masakit sa mata) chancer are you already have one foot in the door.
Lahat kasi ng tao, aminin man natin o hindi ang unang basis sa pag-guage o kilatis sa kausap eh base sa nakikita.
Naalala ko nung nagiinterview ako for facialists sa clinic, may dumating na may sasakyan, mabango at maganda ang damit. Inexplain ko kaagad sa applicant na entry level position ang meron ako at hindi managerial, so in that aspect alam ko na agad na hindi sya fit dun sa role na hinahanap ko.
Look the part, never underdress but do not over do it.
5. Be confident.
As someone who was an applicant before, the best way to convey confidence is through a simple smile. Look at the interviewer straight in the eyes when answering questions. Keep a good posture and modulate your voice.
Diba sabi don’t judge a book by it’s cover?
Unfortunately during interviews yan ang ynang junujudge. Though your credentials will help, mas tinitingnan mo pa din ang body language at interpersonal skills more than all the credentials. You can be the smartest and most qualified, but if you cannot “sell” yourself, olats din.
6. Review common interview questions.
My favorite go to question is “What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Kasi dito tinitingnan natin ang capacity ng applicant think quickly.
Nung time na ako ang interviewee, I made it a point to say that a strength of mine was being a team player, yung kaya ko pakisamahan ang iba’t-ibang tao. Essential kasi sa workplace na marunong ka makisama sa mga katrabaho.
And for your weakness, find something na positive kahit negative yung question.
Personally I used to answer that I had some problems with being a perfectionist (na to fortunately for me asset sa industry ko 🤙🏽 ) so I make take longer than others to finish a task.
Bonus tip: 🤙🏽
1. Interview the interviewer.
Isa sa hinahanap ng company eh yung hindi “flight risk” na employees o yung mga mukang loyal.
Though definitely iba na ang mindset ng younger generations, take into consideration na ang responsible sa hiring nyo eh most likely mga millenials. Dapat alam nyo din ang kiliti ng bawat generation.
Case in point, though hindi millenial ang nag interview sa akin dati (na 3 interviews in total! Halos 1 month apart yung “we will let you know” spiel kaya kabado ako ng isang buong buwan) I made it a point to as questions.
I asked what I can expect from the company in terms of career growth.
Importante yung question na yun dahil implied ko sa kanila na I see myself with the company for years to come and unlike other applicants who would be happy just to be there.
2. Try to break the ice
I used to memorize different jokes for different occassions.
Bakit? Kasi if done correctly, a well timed joke can convey confidence and can reduce the tension if the process.
Hindi ko sinasabi na maging komedyante kayo, pero pag napatawa mo kasi yung nag iinterview, you leave a lasting remark.
Anyway guys mamaya ieedit ko ito, magdagdag ako para naman sa mga hindi first time ma interview. Mag oopera lang me 🤙🏽
